Seeing Jesus, the “Torah-observant” Messiah

In praying effectively for Israel, we must be able to understand that the New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old Testament.
Jesus is that fulfillment!  Open my eyes, that I may behold, Wonderful things from Your law.

Ps 119:18

1. Jesus and the Torah

A. Jesus never spoke anything contrary to the writings of Moses or the Prophets. His life was focused on fulfilling the
scriptures.

Matt 5:17-18 Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill…

• Abolish- disintegrate or destroy

• Fulfill- To abundantly supply for or to fill to the brim John 5:45-47 46 "For if you believed Moses, you would believe
Me, for he
wrote about Me.

Luke 24:44-45…all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be
fulfilled." 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,

2. Hard questions about Jesus

A. How can Jesus be the high priest (Levite) when He is born in the line of Judah?

B. Why did He wait until 30 if He was teaching in the Temple at 12?

C. Why did Jesus get baptized if John’s baptism was for repentance?

D. Why did the sick reach for the fringes of Jesus’s clothes and not His hand?

E. Why did Jesus allow such an unjust trial for Himself?

F. Why 30 pieces of silver- why not 40, 50, 100?

3. The answers are in the writings of Moses…

A. BAPTISM OF JESUS

Matt 3:13-16…15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all
righteousness."

Num 18:14-15 …14 " Every devoted thing in Israel shall be yours (Aaron’s family). 15 " Every first issue of the womb of
all flesh, whether man or animal, which they offer to the Lord, shall be yours; nevertheless the firstborn of man you shall
surely redeem, and the firstborn of unclean animals you shall redeem.

Num 4:3, 23, 30, 35, 39, 43, & 47…from thirty years and upward, even to fifty years old, all who enter the service to do
the work in the tent of meeting. Ex 30:17-21…20 when they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, so that
they will not die; or when they approach the altar to minister, … it shall be a perpetual statute for them, for Aaron and
his descendants throughout their generations."

Luke 1:5…Zacheriah, John’s father, was high priest

B. THE TALIT (TAL-LEET) OF JESUS

Matt 9:20-22…And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and
touched the fringe of His cloak; 21 for she was saying to herself, "If I only touch His garment, I will get well."

Num 15:37-40… they shall make for themselves tassels (Tsiysith) on the corners (Kanaph) of their garments throughout
their generations, … 39 "It shall be a tassel for you to look at and remember all the commandments of the Lord,

a. “Kanaph” can refer to the wing of a bird or even the very edge of a garment.

b. Tsiysith= 600 + 5 knots + 8 strands = 613; 613 instructions from God.

Matt 23:5-6…"But they [the Pharisees] do all their deeds to be noticed by men; for they broaden their phylacteries and
lengthen the tassels of their garments.

Mal 4:2…“ the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings (Kanaph);

Matt 9:20-22…0 And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and
touched the fringe of His cloak; …"Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well." At once the woman was made
well.

• There were a lot of tsiysith in Israel, why was His different?

• Not the faith to be healed but faith that He was the Messiah

Matt 14:34-36; Mark 6:56…they implored Him that they might just touch the fringe of His cloak; and as many as touched
it were
cured.

The touching of Jesus’ “fringes” wasn’t just a “miracle cure” but a personal declaration that the Jewish Messiah had come.

C. TRIAL OF JESUS AND 30 PIECES OF SILVER

Matt 26:49, 52-56 (Jesus is about to be arrested)…54 "How, then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen
this way?" 56 "But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets."

John 18:12-14, 19-24…Jesus questioned by Annas first then sent Him to Caiaphas

Matt 26:59-66…65 Then the high priest tore his robes and said, "He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of
witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think?" They answered, "He deserves death!"

Lev 24:16…Moreover, the one who blasphemes the name of the Lord shall surely be put to death;

Deut 17:2-6; 8-11…6 " On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he
shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness. 8 " If any case is too difficult for you to decide…9 "So you shall
come to the Levitical priest or the judge who is in office in those days, and you shall inquire of them and they will declare
to you the verdict in the case.

D. Messiah will be God

Micah 5:2…From you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, From the days of
eternity."

Isa 7:14…Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel.

Isa 9:6…And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father…

Jer 23:5-6…His name by which He will be called, 'The Lord our righteousness.' (Jehovah-Tsidkenu)

a. When Messiah comes He will be God. When someone shows up claiming to be God,- Kill Him.

E. 30 pieces of silver

Matt 26:14-16… Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to
you?" And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him.

Ex 21:32.."If the ox gores a male or female slave, the owner shall give his or her master thirty shekels of silver, and the
ox shall be stoned.

1 Cor 6:20…For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.

1 Cor 7:23…You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.

Rev 5:9-10…for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people
and nation.
