    Matthew 7:24-29
    Build on the Rock

7:24  Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise
man who built his house on the rock.

•        The key difference is the foundation on which the houses were built (NCBC)

Matthew 7:24-27; Luke 6:47-49

7:25  and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it did not fall for it was founded on the rock.

•        Floods – from below; winds blew – sweeping across; and beat – in every direction (JFB)

7:26  But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine and does not do them, will be like a foolish
man who built his house on the sand.

7:27  and the rain descended, the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house; and
it fell.  And great was its fall.”

•        The difference between these two builders is that one is wise and the other is foolish.  Once having become
disciples of the Lord, there yet remains the possibility of having one’s house collapse.  We must do all our works
according to the principle of the teaching on the Mount.  (WN)
•        The suddenness and completeness with which it sweeps everything unsteady before it (JFB)

7:28  And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at
His teaching.

•        Our Lord originally began speaking to the disciples, but the multitudes also came to the Mount to hear Him (WN)

Matthew 13:54; Mark 1:22; 6:2; Luke 4:32; John 7:46

7:29  for He taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Luke 7:46
