    o        I Am God’s Son
    o        Begotten of the Father
    o        Ask of me – I will ask
    o        Break with rod of iron
    o        Dash them to pieces

    Nations Rage Against God

2:1           Why do the nations rage,
              And the people plot a vain thing?

•        Beholding, in prophetic vision, the peoples and nations, as if in a tumultuous assembly, raging with a fury like the
raging of the sea, designing to resist God’s government, the writer breaks forth into an exclamation in which are mingled
surprise at their folly, indignation at their rebellion (JFB)
•        We have here a very great struggle about the kingdom of Christ, hell and heaven contesting it; the seat of the war
is this earth (MH)
•        The hatred of the nations against Christ of God (TOD)
•        It was not temporary rage, but deep-seated hate, for they set themselves resolutely to withstand the Prince of
Peace (TOD)
•        Never were the notions of any sect of philosophers, nor the power of any prince, opposed with so much violence
as the doctrine and government of Christ (MH)
•        It is deliberate and political (MH)
•        Why do men oppose religion but because they are impatient of its restraints and obligations.  They would break
asunder the bands of conscience they are under and the cords of God’s commandments.  They can show no good
reason.  (MH)

2:2           The kings of the earth set themselves,
              And the rulers take counsel together,
              Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying,

•        The sight of creatures in arms against their God amazes the psalmist’s mind (TOD)
•        To rebel against the Lord’s Anointed is also to rebel against the One who anointed Him (NIV)
•        Note that the commotion is not caused by the people only, but their leaders foment the rebellion (TOD)
•        They set themselves in defiance of reason (MH)
•        When they have done their worst Christ will have a church in the world glorious and triumphant (MH)
•        Anointed – this title well suited Him who holds all offices, and was generally used by the Jews before His coming
to denote Him (JFB)

2:3           “Let us break Their bonds in pieces
              And cast away Their cords from us.

•        Where there is much rage there is generally some folly, and in this case there is an excess of it.  (TOD)
•        Bands and cords denote the restraints of government (JFB)

    Father Proclaims Son’s Inheritance

2:4           He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
              The Lord shall hold them in derision.

•        He has not taken the trouble to rise up and do battle with them – He knows how absurd, ow irrational, how futile
are their attempts against Him – He therefore ‘laughs’ at them (TOD)

2:5           Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
              And distress them in His deep displeasure;

•        After he has laughed, He shall speak; He needs not smite; the breath of His lips is enough (TOD)
•        God’s anger is always an expression of His righteousness (NIV)

2:6           “Yet I have set My King
              On My holy hill of Zion.”

•        He has already done that which the enemy seeks to prevent (TOD)

    “They walls are strength, and at thy gates
    A guard of heavenly warriors waits;
    Nor shall thy deep foundations move,
    Fixed on His counsels and His love.

    Thy foes in vain designs engage;
    Against His throne in vain they rage,
    Like rising waves, with angry roar,
    That dash and die upon the shore.”

    Jesus intercedes for His Inheritance
    The Anointed Declares His Rights as Sovereign

2:7           “I will declare the decree;
              The Lord has said to Me,
              ‘You are My Son,
              Today I have begotten You.

•        If this refers to the Godhead of our Lord, let us not attempt to fathom it, for it is a great truth, a truth reverently
to be received, but not irreverently to be scanned. (TOD)

2:8           Ask of Me, and I will give You
              The nations for Your inheritance,
              And the ends of the earth for Your possession.

•        Uses intercession to take possession of each nation of the earth
•        The agreement the Son must undertake the office of an intercessor
•        Part one of God’s plan:  give His kingdom to His Son (Daniel 7)

2:9           You shall break them with a rod of iron;
              You shall dash them to Pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

    David Exhorts the Redeemed Through the Conflict

2:10         Now therefore, be wise, O kings;
              Be instructed, you judges of the earth.

2:11        Serve the Lord with fear,
              And rejoice with trembling.

2:12         Kiss the Son, lest He be angry,
              And you perish in the way,
              When His wrath is kindled but a little.
              Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

•        Kiss the Son – embrace disciple, lest the Lord be angry with you (AC)
•        Kiss His feet -  refers to full surrender and submission to the King (LB)
