And I saw a NEW HEAVEN and a NEW EARTH

for the first heaven and the first earth
    had passed away,
and the sea no longer existed.

And I saw the holy city, THE NEW JERUSALEM
coming down out of heaven from God
    and made ready
like a bride attired to meet her husband.

And I heard  a loud voice from the throne saying:

“Lo, God’s dwelling place is among men
And He will dwell among them
And they shall be His peoples.
Yes, God Himself will be among them.
He will wipe every tear from their eyes
    Death shall be no more;
    Nor sorrow, nor wail of woe, nor pain;
For the first things have passed away.”

Then He who was seated on the throne said,

“See, I am making everything new.”

    And He added,

    “Write down these words,
for they are trustworthy and true.”

    He also said,

    “They have now been fulfilled.
I am the Alpha and the Omega,
    the beginning and the end.
It is I who will give the thirsty man
the right to drink of the fountain of Life
    without cost.
All this shall be the victor’s heritage,
and I will be his God
and he shall be a son to Me.

But as for cowards and the unfaithful,
    and the polluted and murderers,
    fornicators,
    and those who practice magic
or worship idols, and all liars
    --the portion allotted to them
shall be the lake which burns with fire and sulfur.

    This is the second death.”

Then there came one of the seven angels
who were carrying the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues.

    “Come with me,” he said,
“and I will show you the Bride, the Lamb’s wife.

    So in the Spirit
he carried me to the top of a vast, lofty mountain,
and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God,
and bringing with it the glory of God.

It shone with a radiance like that of a very precious stone--
such as jasper, bright and transparent.
It had a wall, massive and high,
    with twelve large gates,
and in charge of the gates were twelve angels.
    And overhead, above the gates,
names were inscribed which are those
of the twelve tribes of the descendants of Israel.

There were three gates on the east,
    three on the north,
    three on the south,
    and three on the west.

The wall of the city had twelve foundation stones,
and engraved upon them were twelve names
--the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Now he who was speaking to me had a measuring rod of gold

    with which to measure:
            the city
            its gates
            its walls.

The plan of the city is a square

    the length being the same as the breath;

and he measured the city furlong by furlong,
    with his measuring rod

it is fifteen hundred miles long (1,500)
and the length and the breadth and the height of it
    are equal.

And he made the measure of the wall seventy-two yards
    according to human,
    that is, angelic measurement.

The solid fabric of the wall was jasper
and the city itself was made of gold
    resembling transparent glass.

The foundation stones of the city wall
were adorned with all kinds of precious stones:

    1.        Jasper
    2.        Sapphire
    3.        Chalcedony
    4.        Emerald
    5.        Sardonyx
    6.        Sardius
    7.        Chrysolite
    8.        Beryl
    9.        Topaz
    10.        Chrysoprase
    11.        Jacinth
    12.        Amethyst

And the twelve gates were twelve pearls
each of them consisting of a single pearl.

And the main street of the city was made of pure gold
    resembling transparent glass.

I saw no temple in the city

    for the Lord God,
    the Rule of all
    is its temple
    and so is the Lamb.

Nor has the city any need of the sun or of the moon
    to give it light;
for the glory of God has illuminated it
and its lamp is the Lamb.

    By its light the nations will walk;
and into it the kings of the earth are to bring their glory.

    And in the daytime
(for there will be no night there)
    the gates will never be closed;

and the glory and honor of the nations
    shall be brought into it.

and no unclean thing shall ever enter it,
nor any one who is guilty of base conduct or tells lies,
but only they whose names are registered
in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

    Revelation 21

          All Things Made New
    Prophecies of the Eternal State

New Heaven and Earth Are Created

21:1  Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed
away.  Also there was no more sea.

  • The vast expanse of waters that now covers so much of the earth’s surface will be dried up – to make room, likely,
for the teaming billions that are to inhabit it (W)
  • New here suggest freshness, not just a second beginning (NCBH)
  • The present heaven and earth, including the sea, were burned up in the great white throne judgment (NCBH)
  • The sea is the type of perpetual unrest.  Hence our Lord rebukes it as an unruly hostile troubler of His people.  It
symbolized the political tumults out of which ‘the beast’ arose, chapter 13:1.   (JFB)
  • The sea was to the Jews a symbol of separation; moreover, throughout the bible it symbolizes restless
insubordination, and in Revelation 13:1 it casts up the system which incarnates hostility to God and His people (Z)

References:  2 Peter 3:10 (But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be
destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up); 13 (Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens
and a new earth in which righteousness dwells); Revelation 20:11; Isaiah 65:17-19 (For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the
former shall not be remembered or come to mind.  But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem as a
rejoicing, and her people a joy.  I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people; the voice of weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the
voice of crying); Isaiah 66:22 (For just as the new heavens and the new earth which I make will endure before Me, declares the Lord, so your
offspring and your name will endure)

    New Jerusalem Descends

21:2  Then I saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a
bride adorned for her husband.

  • The “Holy City” combines elements of Jerusalem, the temple and the Garden of Eden (NIV)
  • There are at least five reasons that we know that the New Jerusalem is distinct from the Millennial Jerusalem, and is not
resting on the earth, yet close to it. First, the Kings of the earth come into the New Jerusalem during the Millennium to bring
their glory (Revelation 21:24). Second, the leaves are for the healing of the nations (Revelation 22:2). Third, the angels
guard sinners from entry (Revelation 21:12, 22:14-15; Genesis 3:22-24). Fourth, the New Jerusalem lights up the saved
nations on the Millennial earth and not the unsaved ones (Revelation 21:24; 20:7-9). Fifth, the size of the Millennial
Jerusalem is approximately 10 square miles (4,500 rods x 4,500 rods) (Ezekiel 48:30-35; 45:6; 48:15-19) whereas, the
New Jerusalem is 1500 miles.

References:  Isaiah 52:1 (Awake, awake!  Put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city!  For the
uncircumcised and the unclean shall no longer come to you); Isaiah 61:10 (I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, my soul will exult in my God; for
He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a
garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels); 2 Corinthian 11:2 (For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy.  For I have betrothed
you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ); Revelation 3:12; 11:2; 19:7; 21:9, 10; 22:17, 19; Hebrews 11:10 (for
he was looking for the city which has foundations, whose architect and builder is God), 16 (But as it is, they desire a better country, that is a
heavenly one.  Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them)

21:3  And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He
will dwell with them, and they shall be His people.  God Himself will be with them and be their God
.

  • The FATHER Himself comes to dwell with us

References:  Leviticus 26:11 (I will set My tabernacle among you, and My soul shall not abhor you); Ezekiel 37:27 (My dwelling place also will
be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people); 48:35 (The city shall be 18,000 cubits round about; and the name of the city
from that day shall be, “The Lord is there’”); Revelation 7:15; Hebrews 8:2 (a minister in the sanctuary, and in the true tabernacle, which the
Lord pitched, not man); John 14:23 (Jesus answered and said to him, If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him,
and We will come to him, and make Our abode with him); 2 Corinthians 6:16 (Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols?  For we
are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My
people)

21:4  “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor
crying.  There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

  • This is after the Millennium as there is death at end of millennium (JFB)
  • This verse affords great comfort to God’s persecuted, tempted, and suffering people, as it declares that these things
shall annoy them no more (W)

References:  Isaiah 25:8 (He will swallow up death forever, and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces; the rebuke of His people He will
take away from all the earth; for the Lord has spoken); 1 Corinthians 15:26 (The last enemy that will be destroyed is death); Isaiah 35:10 (It
shall not be quenched night or day; its smoke shall ascend forever.  From generation to generation it shall lie waste; no one shall pass through it
forever and ever); 51:11 (So the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with singing, with everlasting joy on their heads.  They
shall obtain joy and gladness; sorrow and sighing shall flee away); 65:19 (I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in My people; the voice of
weeping shall no longer be heard in her, nor the voice of crying); Revelation 7:17; 20:14; 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Therefore if any man is in Christ,
he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come); Hebrews 12:27 (And this expression, “Yet once more”,
denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may
remain)

21:5  Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.”  And He said, “Write, for these
words are true and faithful.”

References:  Revelation 4:2, 9; 19:9; 20:11; 22:6; Isaiah 43:19 (Behold, I will do a new thing, now it shall spring forth; shall you not know it?  I will
even make a road in the wilderness and rivers in the desert); 2 Corinthians 5:17 (Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old
things passed away; behold, new things have come); Hebrews 12:27 (And this expression, “Yet once more”, denotes the removing of those
things which can be shaken, as of created things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may remain)

21:6  And He said to me, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.  I will give of the
fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts.

  • The truth and certainty of this blessed state are ratified by the word and promise of God.  God would have it
committed to writing, for perpetual memory, and continual use to His people.  These words are faithful and true; and it
follows, It is done, is as sure as if it were done already.  We may and ought to take God’s promise as present payment; if
He has said that He makes all things new, it is done.  His titles of honor as a pledge of the full performance, Alpha and
Omega, the beginning and the end.  As His power and will were the first cause of all things, His pleasure and glory are the
last end, and he will not lose His design.  Men may begin designs which they can never bring to perfection; but the counsel
of God shall stand.  It would be inconsistent with the goodness of God, and His love to His people, to create in them holy
desires, and then deny them their proper satisfaction; and therefore they may be assured that He will give them of the
fountain of the water of life freely.  (MH)
  • The great drama is finished, and what was intended is now completed (AC)

References:  Revelation 1:8; 7:17; 10:6; 16:17; 22:13, 17; John 4:10  (Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is
who says to you, “Give Me a drink’, you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water); Isaiah 55:1 (Ho!  Everyone who
thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat.  Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost)

21:7  “He who overcomes shall give him these things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.

References:  Zechariah 8:8 (I will bring them back, and they shall dwell in the midst of Jerusalem.  They shall be My people and I will be their
God, in truth and righteousness); Revelation 2:7; 21:3; 2 Samuel 7:14 (I will be a father to him and he will be a son to Me; when he commits
iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men and the strokes of the sons of men); 2 Corinthians 6:16, 18 (And I will be a Father to you, and you
shall be sons and daughters to Me, says the Lord Almighty)

21:8  “But the cowardly, unbelieving and sinners, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers,
idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the
second death.”

  • To God there are only two classes:  those who are His, and those who are not His (HBH)
  • Cowardly – fearful – those who fear men; and to avoid their opposition, did not follow Christ (W)
  • Fearful – those who, for fear of losing life or their property, either refused to receive the Christian religion, though
convinced of its truth and importance, or having received it, in times of persecution fell away, not being willing to risk their
lives (AC)
  • Unbelieving – those who resist against full evidence (AC)
  • Unbelieving – untrustworthy (NAS)
  • Unbelieving – faithless  (JFB)
  • Abominable – who have drank of the harlot’s ‘cup of abominations’ (JFB)
  • Abominable – those who are polluted with unnatural lust (AC)
  • Murderers – those who take the life of another and those who hate a brother in their heart (AC)
  • Whoremongers – sexually immoral – adulterers, fornicators, whores, prostitutes, and rakes of every description (AC)
  • Sorcerers – magic arts – the magical tradition in ancient times called for the mixing of various herbs to ward off
evil (NIV)
  • Idolaters – those who offer any kind of worship or religious reverence to anything but God (AC)
  • Liars – everyone who speaks contrary to the truth when he knows the truth, and even he who speaks the truth with
the intention to deceive (AC)

References:  1 Corinthians 6:9 (Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived.  Neither
fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites); Revelation 2:11; 9:21; 19:20; 20:14; 21:27; 22:15;
Galatians 5:19-21 (Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are:  immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife,
jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envyings, drunkenness, carousings, and things like these, of which I forewarn
you just as I have forewarned you that those who practice such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God)

    The New Jerusalem
    Jerusalem Established
    The Vision Itself
    (Seventh vision expanded)
    New Jerusalem is Described

21:9  Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls who were full with the seven last
plagues came and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the woman, the Lamb’s wife.”

•        John is not concerned with a place or building, but a ‘people’ employing physical objects to represent spiritual
realities (TB)

References:  Revelation 15:1, 7; 17:1; 19:7; 21:2

21:10  And he carried me away in Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the city, the holy
city, Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

Revelation 1:10; 17:3; 21:2; Ezekiel 48; Ezekiel 40:2 (In the visions of God He brought me into the land of Israel, and set me on a very high
mountain; and on it to the south there was a structure like a city)

21:11  having the glory of God.  Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as
crystal.

  • Having the glory of God – not merely the Shekinah cloud, but God Himself as her glory dwelling in the midst of
her (JFB)
  • Among precious stones there are some even of the same species more valuable than others; for their value is in
proportion to their being free from flaws, and of a uniform and brilliant transparency (AC)
  • Light – luminary (NAS)

References:  Revelation 4:3, 6; 15:8; 21:18, 19, 23; 22:5; Isaiah 60:1 (Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen
upon you); Ezekiel 43:2 (and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east.  And His voice was like the sound of
many waters; and the earth shone with His glory)

21:12  Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names
written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel:

References:  Ezekiel 48:31-34 (….and the name of the city from that day shall be:  THE LORD IS THERE”.); Revelation 21:15, 21, 25; 22:14

21:13  three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on
the west.

  • Shows the perfect symmetry of the city (W)

References:  Ezekiel 48:31-34 (shall be the gates of the city, named for the tribes of Israel, three gates toward the north:  the gate of Reuben,
one; the gate of Judah, one:  the gate of Levi, one.  And on the east side, 4,500 cubits, shall be three gates:  the gate of Joseph, one; the gate
of Benjamin, one; the gate of Dan, one.  And on the south side, 4,500 cubits by measurement, shall be three gates:  the gate of Simeon, one;
the gate of Issachar, one; the gate of Zebulun, one.  On the west side 4,500 cubits, shall be three gates:  the gate of Gad, one; the gate of
Asher, one; the gate of Naphtali, one.); Ephesians 2:20 (having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus
Himself being the cornerstone); Hebrews 11:10 (for he was looking for the city which has foundations whose architect and builder is God);
Acts 1:26 (And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles)

21:14  Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the
twelve apostles of the Lamb.

  • Twelve stones – to intimate that it was by the doctrine of the apostles that souls enter into the church, and thence
    into the New Jerusalem (AC)

References:  Ephesians 2:20 (having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief
cornerstone); Hebrews 11:10 (for he was looking for the city which has foundations whose architect and builder is God); Acts 1:26 (And they
drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles)

21:15  And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall.

  • In chapter 11:2 the non-measuring of the outer courts of the temple implied its being given up to secular and heathen
desecration.  So here, on the contrary, the city being measured, implies the entire consecration of every part, all things
being brought up to the most exact standard of God’s holy requirements, and also God’s accurate guardianship
henceforth of even the most minute parts of His holy city from all evil.  (JFB)

References:  Ezekiel 40:3 (He took me there, and behold, there was a man whose appearance was like the appearance of bronze.  He had a
line of flax and a measuring rod in his hand, and he stood in the gateway); Revelation 11:1; 21:12, 21, 25

21:16  The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth.  And he measured the city
with the reed:  twelve thousand furlongs.  Its length, breadth, and height are equal.

  • Square – the square is a figure of completeness and perfection (W)
  • The quadrangular form intimates its perfection and stability, for the square figure was a figure of perfection among
the Greeks (AC)
  • Twelve thousand furlongs – 1,500 Roman miles. 1,500 miles in length, breadth, and height; and this would give
    3,375,000,000 cubic miles (W)
  • Furlongs – stadia – 600 ft.  (NAS)
  • 12,000 x 600 ft. = 7,200,000 feet ; one mile = 5,280 feet;  1,363.6 miles  (estimated distance from Missouri to
Florida)

21:17  then he measured its wall:  one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man,
that is, of an angel.

  • This is twelve multiplied by itself (AC)
  • The cubit is the measure from the tip of the elbow to the tip of the middle finger, and is generally reckoned at one
foot and a half, or eighteen inches (AC)
  • 144 x 18 inches = 2,592 inches or 216 feet

References:  Deuteronomy 3:11; Revelation 13:18; 21:9

21:18  The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass.

References:  Revelation 4:6; 21:11, 21:21

21:19  The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones; the first
foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald,

  • Precious stones are of two distinct kinds:  an-isotropic and isotropic.  The difference is if you put isotropic precious
stones in pure light it loses its color and brilliance.  An-isotropic will turn into all the colors of the rainbow with patterns
  • Jasper – sea-green color in some species but generally a bright reddish brown (AC)
  • Sapphire – blue, next in hardness to the diamond (AC)
  • Chalcedony – a genus of the semi-pellucid gems (AC)
  • Emerald – bright green color without any mixture (AC)

References:  Isaiah 54:11 (O you afflicted one, tossed with tempest, and not comforted, behold, I will lay your stones with colorful gems, and lay
your foundations with sapphires); Isaiah 54:11 (O Afflicted one, storm-tossed, and not comforted, behold, I will set your stones in antimony,
and your foundations I will lay in sapphires); Revelation 4:3; 21:11, 19, 20; Exodus 28:17-20; Ezekiel 28:13 (You were in Eden, the garden of
God; every precious stone was your covering:  the ruby, the topaz, and the diamond; the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper; the lapis lazuli, the
turquoise, and the emerald; and the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, was in you.  On the day that you were created they
were prepared)

21:20  the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the
tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.

  • Sardonyx – the onxy is an accidental variety of the agate kind; it is of a dark horny color, in which is a plate of bluish
white, and sometimes of red (AC)
  • Sardius – blood-red color (AC)
  • Chrysolite – gold stone; it is of a dusky green with a cast of yellow.  It is a species of the topaz (AC)
  • Beryl – a pellucid gem of a bluish green color (AC)
  • Topaz – a pale, dead green, with a mixture of yellow (AC)
  • Chrysoprasus – a yellowish green and cloudy topaz (AC)
  • Jacinth – a dead red color, with a mixture of yellow (AC)
  • Amethyst – generally purple or violet color, composed of a strong blue and deep red (AC)
  • These stones are nearly the same with those on the breastplate of the high priest, and probably were intended to
express the meaning of the Hebrew words there used. (AC)

References:  Exodus 28:17; Revelation 4:3

21:21  The twelve gates were twelve pearls; each individual gate was of one pearl.  And the street of
the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.

  • Pearls of no value to Jews.  They are a result of injury.  Pearls = Gentiles.  Enter through Gentile gates; gospel
entrusted to Gentiles.  Pearls to be a gate into the presence of God for the treasure of the people of Israel

References:  Matthew 13:45, 46 (Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl
of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it); Revelation 4:6; 17:4; 21:12, 15, 18, 25; 22:2; Isaiah 54:12 (Moreover, I will make
your battlements of rubies, and your gates of crystal, and your entire wall of precious stones)

The Glory of the New Jerusalem

21:22  But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

•        Temple – sanctuary (NAS)

References:  John 4:21 (Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem,
worship the Father), 23 (But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father
is seeking such to worship Him); Matthew 24:2; Revelation 1:8; 5:6; 7:17; 14:4

21:23  The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it.
The Lamb is its light.

References:  Isaiah 24:23 (Then the moon will be disgraced and the sun ashamed; for the Lord of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in
Jerusalem and before His elders, gloriously); 60:19, 20 (The sun shall no longer be your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give l
ight, and your God your glory.  Your sun shall no longer go down, nor shall your moon withdraw itself; for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and the days of your mourning shall be ended); Isaiah 24:23 (then the moon will be abashed and the sun ashamed, for the Lord of hosts will
reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, and His glory will be before His elders); Revelation 5:6; 7:17; 14:4; 21:11, 25; 22:5

21:24  And the nations shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor of the
nations to Him.

  • This is an allusion to the promise that the Gentiles should bring their riches, glory, and excellence to the Temple at
Jerusalem (AC)
