MINISTERING IN POWER OF HOLY SPIRIT – PART I
I. A CALL FOR EVERY MEMBER OF OUR BODY TO ENGAGE IN PRAYER MINISTRY
11 Come, my beloved, let us go forth to the field; let us lodge in the villages. 12Let us get up early to the vineyards…12there I will give you
my love. (SOS 7:11-12 NKJV)
I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”38 “I sent you to reap
that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”
(John 4:37-38 NKJV)
10But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I,
but the grace of God which was with me.
(1 Cor. 15:10 NKJV)
58Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in
vain in the Lord (1 Cor. 15:58 NKJV)
To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.
(Col. 1:29 NKJV)
I. GENERAL PRAYER FOR SPIRITUAL RENEWAL:
A. How do I pray for someone in the context of spiritual renewal?
1. Stand in front of the person you are praying for so that they can hear what you are praying. If the person begins to look like they
may fall down, make sure there is someone behind them to catch them.
2. When deep emotional issues are being brought up, it is best for men to pray for men and women to pray for women. This helps all
feel safe and honored.
3. The scriptures highlight the importance of “laying hands” on those we pray for with expectancy that the Holy Spirit will increase His
presence and ministry as we pray. Lay hands on the head or the shoulders of the person. Make sure not to push them in any way.
4. Also refrain from using gestures like scooping etc. that can easily trivialize the person of the Holy Spirit and be a hindrance to those
coming to the meetings looking for a model of spiritual renewal that can be backed up in scripture. (Acts 8:18; Mk. 16:18)
B. What should I pray for someone in the context of spiritual renewal?
1. Pray simple phrases and scriptures over the person. The best way to being praying for others in this context of spiritual renewal is
to keep it simple. Bless what the Holy Spirit is doing in the life of the believer and ask for increase. Stay engaged and be observant and
attentive to any whispers the Holy Spirit might speak to you. (1 Cor. 12:7-12) If you feel the Lord may be giving you a phrase or word over
the person, pray it. (Lk. 11:13)
2. While not all that we pray needs to be an actual Bible verse, we do want to make sure that we are praying Biblical concepts and
truths. The Word of God is the Holy Spirit’s best runway through which He takes us into the heights of His presence and power. The Holy
Spirit does not need us to “jump start” His work of bringing joy by joking or silliness for the sake of silliness. We want to be careful that the
prayers we pray are not jokes to get things started, but rather real prayers that invite the Holy Spirit to release His presence. He knows
best how to refresh His people. (1 Cor. 6:12)
5-Step Guide for Deliverance Prayer Ministry (Shelley Hundley/Stephen Beauchamp)
The following is a resource for all believers to use in agreeing with others for the purpose of deliverance. It is not necessary to adhere
exactly to the order of these steps, rather these steps are meant to launch all believers into effective deliverance prayer. The following
model seeks to compassionately deliver people while allowing them to retain their dignity. We want to minimize the pain, discomfort, and/or
shame, while also addressing the roots of the bondage in a way that enables the individual to stay free. Deliverance is not to be viewed as
something done to the person but rather a process in which we stand with the person for a break-through of freedom in their life.
As ministers, we seek to establish a deliverance model that:
• reflects the love of Christ at all times
• reinforces the authority of Christ in the life of the believer
• minimizes demonic manifestations (in order to avoid embarrassment for the believer and ensure the person is able to participate
freely in the deliverance process without hindrance)
1. Interview 2. Highlight 3. Oppose 4. Proclaim 5. U walk it out
I. I- INTERVIEW: ASK IF THEY NEED SOMEONE TO AGREE WITH THEM FOR FREEDOM
*In the context of the Awakening meetings, often the first two steps: Interview and Highlight are already dealt with and the minister should
move straight into Oppose and Proclaim.
Situation 1: Interview the person who is standing to receive prayer after the deliverance ministry call Interview the person by simply asking
what God is doing in them and if they want someone to stand with them in prayer for a break-through of freedom in their life. Allow them to
define and set the tone for what God is doing.
Situation 2: Intervene if a person is having a physical demonic manifestation that is distressing them
Do not assume that you know or can discern what type of physical manifestation may be taking place. Ask the person what they are
sensing. If they are distressed and can’t respond to you, or they respond expressing that they are experiencing confusion, fear etc.
proceed with the following steps. (you can return to these steps as needed throughout the prayer time)
1. Pray a prayer expressing Jesus’ Lordship over the person and the situation and asking for the Holy Spirit to submit all things under
the Lordship of Jesus before you begin the deliverance process. “I speak to every spirit, you must submit to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I
bind any spirits from manifesting in this person’s body, mind, will or emotions.” Do not shout or embarrass the person in any way, simply
speak in a calm manner.
Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” (Luke 10:17 NKJV)
2. If needed, speak calmly to the person telling them to rise up in their spirit and take control of their body so that they can engage with
you. “Name, rise up in your spirit where Jesus dwells. Let His peace flow from your spirit right now. Name, take authority over your body,
mind will and emotions.”
Proceed with the interview: engage the person in conversation in a personable manner, expecting them to be able to respond asking them
if they want to continue in a time of prayer for break-through in their life. Explain the deliverance process that may be needed and
emphasize that you are coming along side the person as they confront the lies and activity of the enemy. The dignity of the person must be
upheld at all times. Be sensitive to your surroundings and make sure the person does not experience humiliation of any kind as you pray
with them. (If you feel overwhelmed at any point in praying for a person’s deliverance need: seek out a ministry captain, IHOP deliverance
team member, or any IHOP leader.)
II. H-HIGHLIGHT: THE HOLY SPIRIT HIGHLIGHTS AND HEALS THE SOURCES OF BONDAGE
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the
Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have
been freely given to us by God. (1Cor. 2:11-12 NKJV)
A. Highlight - Pray with the person, asking God to highlight to them:
1. Wounds that they need healing from in order to get free (abuse, etc.)
2. Sins they have committed or responses to the abuse etc. (immorality, unforgiveness etc.)
3. Lies they have believed and agreement they have had with the enemy (I am dirty, God doesn’t accept me, inner vows etc.)
Ask the individual what thoughts may be coming to their mind, trust that the Holy Spirit will speak to them. If God shows you something,
submit it humbly but let the person confirm or not confirm it. Trust that the Holy Spirit will lead this process of bringing areas to mind as well
as bringing revelation of all that God wants the person to receive in Him.
B. Healing and Forgiveness – legally give to Jesus all areas that were brought up and pray for healing as the person forgives others and
receives forgiveness. The issues of pain do not have to be completely resolved (since that is usually a process), but each area should be
surrendered to Jesus. Part of healing may be leading the person in speaking forgiveness to anyone that has wronged him or her or you
may do this in the next step. Take some time to allow the person to feel the healing that Jesus is bringing, but keep in mind the next steps
and the need to continue moving forward.
34 And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.
35 “So My heavenly Father
also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.” (Matthew 18:34-35 NKJV)
III. O-OPPOSE: LEAD THE INDIVIDUAL IN OPPOSING THE OPPRESSION OF THE ENEMY
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7 NKJV)
A. Repent: individual repents for standing in agreement with the lies of the enemy over their life and repents of all areas of sin that the
Holy Spirit highlighted in the previous step.
(Forgive: Lead the person in speaking forgiveness to anyone that has wronged him or her and in receiving forgiveness for sins they have
committed if this was not covered during the previous step.)
B. Renounce: individual verbally renounces sin and demonic oppression.
If others have sinned against them, lead them in handing over their case to God asking for His healing and forgiving those who have
wronged them. Keep it simple and ask them to repeat after you (Example: the person states that they struggle with anger and prays “I
repent of every sin of anger I have committed, I renounce the spirit of anger in Jesus name and ask that you would set me free God.”)
IV. P-PROCLAIM: PROCLAIM FREEDOM AND PRAY FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT TO FILL
And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons.
Freely you have received, freely give. (Matthew 10:7-8 NKJV)
A. Proclaim Freedom: Speak in a calm and assertive voice (no yelling necessary). Command all demonic oppression to go in the
name of Jesus.
B. Pray for the Holy Spirit to Fill: Re-iterate God’s healing and truth over the areas that were renounced. Prophesy God’s calling and
love for the individual. Ask the Holy Spirit to fill all the areas that have now been cleansed and set free and to strengthen the believer in
their confidence in the love of Christ.
V. U – U WALK IT OUT:
After completing the prayer time, give the person any follow up info they may need and encourage them to commit to Godly community,
regular prayer and study of the Word. It is important that they have confidence that they can walk out their newfound freedom by the power
of the Spirit.
