The Glory of God

Isaiah 6:1 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train
of His robe filled the temple.  2 Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his
face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew.  3 And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy,
holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!”  4 And the posts of the door were shaken
by the voice of him who cried out, and the house was filled with smoke.

I.        BECOMING MESSENGERS OF THE GLORY OF GOD

    A.        The seraphim are beholding the God who is other than.
    B.        They are so overwhelmed that they cover their faces and feet.
    C.        They cry to one another, “He is Holy!”.  “What we’re experiencing goes on forever!”  “There is no end to
    this glory”
    D.        The temple is shaken by the voice of the seraphim (angel/messenger).
    E.        If we are to become messengers who shake the temple, we need a good look at God.

Prov. 29:18 Where there is no vision, the people perish … (KJV)

1.        The root of the Hebrew word for vision here is “Hazah” which means spiritual vision, heavenly revelation, or
prophetic insight.  Job used this word when he declared …

Job 19:26 And after my skin is destroyed, this I know, That in my flesh I shall see (hazah) God,

In its foundational meaning, “hazah” means to “see God.

2.        Without a good look at God people will give up and die.

II.        AFTER ALL OF MOSES’ SUPERNATURAL EXPERIENCES, HIS CRY WAS “SHOW ME YOUR GLORY”

Exodus 33:18-19 And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My         goodness pass before
you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to         whom I will be gracious, and I will
have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”

A.        What did Moses experience with God before asking this question?

    1.        The audible voice of the Lord from a burning bush
    2.        His rod would turn into a serpent
    3.        His hand could turn leprous and then be healed again whenever he wanted
    4.        10 plagues
    5.        Pillar of fire, pillar of cloud
    6.        The wealth of Egypt was given to Israel
    7.        The Red Sea opened up and millions of people walked across on dry land
    8.        The greatest military power of the day is destroyed supernaturally
    9.        The bitter, acrid waters of Marah were turned sweet and millions drank
    10.        The entire nation is supernaturally fed with manna and quail
    11.        Water came out of a rock and watered an entire nation
    12.        In battle, when Moses held his hands up, they won, when he put his hands down, they would begin to lose.
    13.        God spoke to him face to face as a man speaks to his friend
    14.        Mt. Sinai was covered with smoke and fire, lightning shot out from the fire, the mountain shook violently, and a supernatural
trumpet blast sounded from the mountain.
    15.        The finger of God wrote the law on the tablets
    16.        Moses was caught up to the sapphire pavement with Aaron and the elders.  They saw God and God shared a
    meal with them.

B.        After all of this, Moses asks God to show him His glory.  Hasn’t Moses seen the glory of God?  Wouldn’t all of us
think we’d experienced the glory of God if we had experienced what Moses experienced?

C.        Moses understood that each supernatural event he had experienced to that point was a sign pointing him to a greater
reality.  Signs point to something, they are not an end in and of themselves.  They are extremely important, but not our
ultimate destination.

III.        GOD ANSWERS MOSES’ REQUEST

A.        God’s answer to Moses – “I will cause all my goodness to pass before you and I will proclaim my name”

1.        Goodness = tuwb, (toob); good in the widest sense, beauty, gladness, joy.

a.        God’s answer to Mose request for His glory is that God parades His joy, beauty, and gladness in front of Moses!

Ex. 34:6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God,
slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,  7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion
and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; (NIV)

2.        God Himself tells us who he is!  We can get our definition of God straight from God!

    a.        Compassionate / Merciful – the root of this word is the Hebrew word “rechem” which means “womb”.  He is gentle,
life-giving, and nurturing like a mother’s womb.  He also will not allow us to remain unchanged.
    (1)        Matt 5:7 – Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy (mercy = to alleviate the consequences of
    someone’s stupidity)
    b.        Gracious – channuwn “to bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior” – In overwhelming humility, God gets down
on our level and interacts with us, like a father with a toddler. (Is 57:15)
    c.        Slow to anger – “to flare the nostrils”.  He is slow to impatience, uncontrolled reaction and anger.
    d.        Love – checçed -  this word could be translated “beauty”
    e.        Faithfulness - }emeth – stability, certainty, trustworthiness.
    f.        Maintaining – natsar – to guard, defend, and protect
    g.        Forgiving – to bear, carry, lift up
    h.        Wickedness – the root of this word means to bend or make crooked / “iniquity”
    i.        “Here I AM, Here I AM!, your Father, your God.  I will nurture and care for you and bring you life like a
mother’s womb, I will bend down and interact with you in ways you can understand and relate to.  When you fall
short I will not flare up in anger and irritation, I’m abounding in beauty, love, stability, and trustworthiness.  I will
defend love for you at every turn, I will carry you in the places you are bent and I will forgive you for the times you
    rebel against my leadership.

B.        The Apostle John declares these same truths.

1John 4:16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love (agape).

1.        When you “agape” someone, you cherish, honor, and esteem them for their benefit, not for yours.  You treat them
as precious without expecting them to meet your needs.

2.        Jesus said that the 1st and 2nd commandment was that we should agape God with all our heart, soul, mind, and
strength, and agape our neighbor.

3.        Agape for one another is the proof that we are disciples of Jesus.

John 13:35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love (agape) for one another.”

1Corinthians 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love (agape), I have become
sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.  2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all
knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love (agape), I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love (agape),
it profits me nothing.

IV.        THE EARTH WILL BE FILLED WITH THE GLORY OF GOD

John 17:22 And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:

Habakkuk 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD,
As the waters cover the sea.

2Corinthians 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the
light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 6:3 And one cried to another and said:
     “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!”
