Jesus' Eyes of Fire (Part 2)

I.        JESUS HAS EYES OF FIRE

A.        Jesus’ eyes of fire speak of His ability to see everything, to feel fiery desire for us, to impart it to us and to destroy
all that hinders love. John emphasized Jesus’ eyes (Rev. 1:14; 2:18; 19:12).

13 In the midst of the…lampstands One like the Son of Man…14 His eyes like a flame of fire; 15 His feet were like fine
brass, as if refined in a furnace… (Rev. 1:13-15)

B.        Knowing that Jesus’ eyes are like fire equips us to walk in the fear of the Lord and intimacy with God. It will be
especially relevant in the temptation and persecution prophesied in Revelation. Jesus’ eyes of fire reveal His majesty and
beauty as they fascinate, tenderize and terrorize us.

C.        God connected His fire to jealous love. He is a consuming or devouring fire who jealously desires us and destroys
all that hinders love.

24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous (passionate) God. (Deut. 4:24)

D.        Holy fire surrounds God’s throne. A river of fire comes from the throne, and the seven lamps of fire and seraphim
(lit. burning ones) burn before it. The sea of glass is ablaze with fire.

10 A river of fire was flowing and coming out from before Him… (Dan. 7:10 NAS)

2 A sea of glass mingled with fire, and those who have the victory…standing on (it)… (Rev. 15:2)

1 I saw the Lord sitting on a throne…2 Above it stood seraphim… (Isa. 6:1-2)

E.        Definition of fire: fire is a chemical reaction that releases heat and light accompanied by flame. There are spiritual
and natural implications to Jesus’ fire. Jesus releases the “fire of grace” or the “fire of judgment” depending on how
people respond to Him.

II.        JESUS’ EYES OF DESIRE: JEALOUSY FOR LOVE

A.        Jesus’ eyes of fire reveal His strong desire for us. They give us insight into what He feels. He is a Bridegroom
God filled with holy benevolent jealousy. He will not relent in His pursuit until He has all our heart. We cry, “Lord, we want
more of You.” He says, “I want more of you”.

14 For the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God… (Ex. 34:14)

B.        Fire consumes or takes possession and control of everything in its path. God’s love is not passive. Love is not
toleration, but desire. Desire implies want, but not lack. Jesus lacks nothing but still wants us. Not because He is needy,
but because He is love, the very fountain of desire.

C.        Jesus’ eyes warm our hearts with the flame of love. His eyes tenderize our heart as fire makes metal soft. His eyes
melt our frozen hearts as fire melts ice. He promised to visit us with His fire.

16 He (Jesus) will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. (Lk. 3:16)

D.        When we feel cold in our love and service, He will set our heart on fire by the heat of His gaze. The Spirit released
His fire on the disciples in the upper room as they waited before Him.

3 There appeared to them…tongues, as of fire, and sat upon each of them. (Acts 2:3)

32 They (disciples on road to Emmaus) said to one another, "Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on
the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?" (Lk. 24:32)

E.        Jesus will supernaturally seal our heart by imparting His fiery jealous love in us.

6 Set Me (Jesus) as a seal upon your heart…for love is as strong as death, its flames are flames of fire, a most vehement
flame. 7 Many waters (sins) cannot quench love… (Song 8:6-7)

1.        His seal on our heart is the fire of love that cannot be quenched. It is as strong or as comprehensive as death.
Nothing in the natural realm escapes the power of death. Its grasp is comprehensive. God’s jealous love is unrelenting
in pursuing us until He has all.

2.        Water always puts out fire (unless it is God’s supernatural fire). The enemy will send the waters of temptation,
apathy, disappointment and pain to put this fire out. God’s love poured in our hearts (when continually yielded to) is more
powerful than these floods.

III.        JESUS IS OMNISCIENT: HE POSSESSES ALL KNOWLEDGE

A.        Jesus is omniscient which means He possesses all knowledge and wisdom. He sees the full truth about everything.
As fire penetrates metal, so He can see through everything. He sees the heart of the matter because He sees what
happens behind the scenes and below the surface.

21 For His eyes are on the ways of man, and He sees all his steps. (Job 34:21)

B.        The fear of God is the awareness that God sees everything that we do. He sees all that is hidden in the darkness.
Knowing that He sees our compromise causes us to walk in the fear of God.

13 There is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give
account. (Heb. 4:13)

C.        The Lord takes careful notice of everything and everybody, His friends and His enemies. This strengthens those
who love Him and is hated by those who do not.

3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch on…evil and the good. (Prov. 15:3)

D.        Jesus applied the revelation of His eyes of fire to His judgment against immorality in Thyatira. He searches our
mind and heart. He will honor our cry to be delivered by helping us. Churches in the region of Thyatira feared God as they
saw Jesus’ judgment on some believers in the region.

18 These things says the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire…20 I have a few things against you, because you
allow that woman Jezebel…to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality…22 I will cast her into a sickbed…
23 I will kill her children with death, and all the churches shall know that I am He who searches the minds and hearts. And
I will give to each one of you according to your works. (Rev. 2:18-23)

E.        Jesus imparts His fire of grace to those who seek to obey Him and His fire of judgment to those who refuse Him by
continuing in immorality. The eyes of fire that judge will help with grace. His eyes search our heart with perfect knowledge.
The fire that warms our heart also exposes it.

2 All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits. (Prov. 16:2)

F.        Fire purifies or consumes impurity in God’s people. Jesus as a refiner's fire will purify what is precious as fire
purifies precious metals and removes what is worthless in our lives.

2 He is like a refiner's fire…3 He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, and purge them
as gold and silver… (Mal 3:2-3)

G.        God's eyes and eyelids are synonyms. They refer to His close scrutiny. We close our eyelids or squint when
closely scrutinizing something. God tests or scrutinizes or proves us as metal was tested by fire. He scrutinizes or
examines us for purity as one analyzes or assays metal.

4 The LORD's throne is in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men. (Ps. 11:4)

H.        Jesus’ eyes are pure. He sees without any distortion of the facts in contrast to sinful human judges. He as no
wrong information, no partial information, no biased information.

13 You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and cannot look on wickedness. (Hab. 1:13)

IV.        JESUS SEES OUR LONGINGS TO LOVE HIM: CONFIDENCE IN LOVE

A.        Jesus sees both the negative and positive movements of our heart. He sees the counsels of our heart (motives)
which includes our secret longings to love Him more. He sees the “yes” in our spirit and our cry for help to obey Him.
Jesus will affirm or praise you for these desires.

5 The Lord comes who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then
each one's praise will come from God. (1 Cor. 4:5)

15 The eyes of the LORD are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry. (Ps. 34:15)

B.        Jesus does not define our life by our struggles or just our victories. He sees more than our outward actions. He
defines us by what we set our heart on and by our longing to love Him.

9 The eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose
heart is loyal to Him. (2 Chron. 16:9)

C.        Jesus takes our love seriously even when it is weak love because it is still genuine love. The Lord relates to us on
the basis of what we long to be in Him, instead of what we fail to be.

D.        Jesus affirms the "budding virtues" in our life, knowing that each virtue starts out as only a seed of desire. He sees
these desires as the beginning of victory before it is manifest in our character. Our obedience begins when we set our
heart to obey not just after we gain the full victory.

E.        After we repent and declare war on our sin, then we can be confident that He feels pleasure in each step of our
growth process. This understanding causes us to run to Him without shame.

F.        His eyes are always on us. We are always on His mind. We have His full attention. He sees every movement of our
heart to love Him. It is not in vain. Do you know the way that you move Him?

21 The ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD…He ponders all his paths. (Prov. 5:21)

G.        When we stumble, we can feel like a hopeless hypocrite and want to quit. Jesus even reminds us of how much we
love Him. Peter recovered from shame knowing that Jesus saw his love.

17 Lord, You know all things; You know that I (Peter) love You. (Jn. 21:17)

H.        We communicate with our eyes. We cannot look into someone’s eyes if our conscience is not clear. Children look
away when they know they are in trouble. Many spend excessive emotional energy fighting the fires of condemnation and
worthlessness. It prevents us from effectively walking with the Lord because we are preoccupied with shame.

V.        JESUS SEES OUR WORKS: RELEVANCE

A.        Jesus perfectly sees, remembers and rewards all of our works. This makes every day of our life relevant. He sees
the love, labor and money that we sow secretly into His kingdom.

13 Each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test
each one's work...14 He will receive a reward. (1 Cor. 3:13-14)

B.        What makes our life so valuable and important is that Jesus sees and remembers even our smallest acts of
obedience. When we understand that Jesus sees all, then we are not compelled to prove things to others. Why? We have
confidence that we are already proven in His sight.

10 For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have
ministered to the saints… (Heb. 6:10)

C.        Every small act of service, including giving someone a cup of cold water is rewarded. We move His heart by our
small acts of service to others and even by sitting before Him (Lk. 10:38-42). He remembers our prayers and even how
we blessed our enemies when they slandered us.

42 Whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he
shall by no means lose his reward. (Mt. 10:42)

VI.        JESUS SEES OUR BURDENS: INTIMACY

A.        Jesus sees and walks with us in our burdens because He knows everything that is important to us. We grow in
intimacy with God by knowing He sees our struggle, pain and even our greatness. He knows our longings, dreams and
intentions to love Him. Jesus rejoices and weeps with us.

15 Rejoice with those who rejoice…weep with those who weep… (Rom. 12:15)

B.        Jesus celebrates with us as He shares in our triumphs. He sees the sacrifices we make in pursuing a life of love.
He walks us through every sin and still treats us with honor and sees our love as genuine. He knows our pain in our
ailure, and protects us by not disclosing most of our sin.

12 Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. (1 Cor. 13:12)

C.        Jesus sees our joy and sorrows. He understands the secret aspects of our life that are unknown, unnoticed and
misunderstood by others. It exhilarates us to be fully known without shame.

2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path…and are
acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, O LORD, You know it altogether…
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it…17 How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O
God! How great is the sum of them…18 They are more in number than the sand… (Ps. 139:2-6, 17-18)

VII.        JESUS SEES OUR FUTURE: DIRECTION AND HOPE

A.        Jesus knows our future as well as the future of all the nations. Nothing surprises Him.

9 I am God, and there is none like Me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things that are
not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand… (Isa. 46:9-10)

8 I will…teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. (Ps. 32:8)

B.        Our future is glorious. Jesus will restore to us all that He intended in creating the garden of Eden. As we look at
what Jesus sees about the future, we will walk in supernatural peace.

13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the
Holy Spirit. (Rom. 15:13)

VIII.        JESUS SEES OUR ENEMIES: SECURITY

A.        Jesus knows all of our enemies and their strategies against us. This brings us great security.

4 Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. 5 Into Your hand I commit my spirit;
You have redeemed me…15 My times are in Your hand; deliver me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who
persecute me. (Ps. 31:4, 5, 15)

B.        Our knowledge of Jesus’ omniscience persuades us to not give up and give in to sin.

7 He does not withdraw His eyes from the righteous. (Job 36:7)

C.        Jesus sees all the plans of our enemies.

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the
LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of
the fowler... (Ps. 91:1-3)

IX.        JESUS’ EYES OF FIRE: REMOVING ALL WICKEDNESS

A.        The book of Revelation is Jesus’ battle plan to destroy the enemy and is written out in advance. It is Jesus’ very
eyes of fire that will release great trouble on the Antichrist in the end times.

12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. (Rev. 19:12)

B.        Jesus’ eyes are like fire because of His brightness consumes with wicked as fire does stubble (Deut 32:22;
Isa 10:17; Ezek 21:31-32; Heb 12:29).

X.        SUMMARY: WHAT FIRE DOES

A.        Summary: The fire in Jesus’ eyes reveals His desire for us. His eyes see our failures causing us to walk in the fear
of God. He sees our immature longings to love Him, giving us confidence. He sees, remembers and rewards all that we do
in serving Him, giving relevance to each day. He sees our burdens, joys and sorrows in intimacy. He knows our future,
giving us direction and hope and knows all our enemies, giving us security. Holy Spirit, help me to look into His eyes.

B.        Fire spreads: The Holy Spirit imparts God’s fire to those who want it.

Fire purifies: It consumes or removes impurity from God’s people.

Fire destroys: God’s enemies will be destroyed. This shows us God’s view of sin.

Fire terrifies: Few things terrify like a vast fire that threatens to consume a city.

Fire illuminates: As fire, He is light to those that love Him.

Fire warms: His eyes warm and tenderize our hearts with the flame of God’s love.

Fire empowers: Fire has been a source of energy for cooking or running an engine.

C.        Fire speaks of God’s glory (Ex. 24:17; Deut. 4:24; Heb. 12:29; Dan. 7:9; 2 Thes. 1:7), jealousy (Deut. 4:24;
Heb. 12:29; Ps. 79:5; Isa 33:14), protection (2 Kgs. 6:17; Zech. 2:5), the power of God’s word and truth (Ps. 39:3;
Jer. 5:14; 20:9; 23:29; Lk. 12:49), purified by trials (Ps. 66:12; Isa. 43:2; Zech. 13:9; Mal. 3:2-3; 1 Pet. 1:7; 4:12), Holy
Spirit (Isa 4:4; Lk. 3:16; Acts 2:3), guidance (Isa. 50:10-11), holiness (Isa. 6:4), judgment against sin (Deut. 9:3;
Ps. 18:8; 89:46; Isa. 5:24; 30:33; Jer. 48:45; Lam. 1:13; Ezek. 39:6).

D.        Fire is used in eternal judgment (Mt. 3:10-12; 5:22; Isa. 30:33; 66:24; Jer. 7:31; Mt. 13:40, 42; 25:41; Mk. 9:45-49;
2 Thes. 1:7; Heb. 10:27; Jude 7).

E.        It speaks also of evil or lust (Prov. 6:27-29; 16:27; Isa. 9:18; 65:5; Hos. 7:6; 1 Cor. 7:9), greed (Prov. 30:16), evil
speech (Prov. 16:27; Jas 3:5-6).

F.        God is compared to fire because of His glory and because He consumes the wicked as fire burns grass
(Deut. 32:22; Isa. 10:17; Ezek. 21:31-32; Heb. 12:29).

G.        Fire is a symbol of God’s presence as seen in the burning bush (Ex. 3:2), on Mt. Sinai (Ex. 19:18), the pillar of fire
(Ex. 13:21). He revealed His glory with fire to His prophets (Isa. 6:4-5; Ezek. 1:4-5; Rev. 1:14)
