My Dictionary - Letter "C"
CAIN - his offering at the end (process of time); Abel gave first fruits. he tried to make an offering from his labors.
• His character flaw: self-will. He was a maker or fabricator, one who makes his own way. Desire to do things our own way,
instead of God’s way or of those whom He has placed as authorities in our life. When his offering was rejected, he
reacted badly. Instead of acknowledging that his way was wrong, he became angry and depressed. His depression and
anger gave place to a spirit of murder. Self-pity keeps us making excuses and placing the blame on others so as to
avoid taking the responsibility that could help cure us.
CAKE – unturned – flat cake – a metaphor describing unwise policies Hosea 7:8 NIV
CALENDAR – new calendar began for Israel at Exodus – month ABIB
• The Exodus was to mark the beginning of a new era; and not only the years in the national history were to be
counted form it, but also the months of each year were to be counted from the first month of Israel’s freedom. Israel is
now given a new calendar, thus making the break with Egypt complete.
• The ordinary Jewish year consists of twelve lunar months of a little more than 29-1/2 days each, with every new
moon a minor festival. Twelve lunar months total only a little more than 354-1/3 days, eleven days less than the solar
year, which consists, roughly of 365-1/4 days; and on the other hand, the festivals had to be celebrated in their seasons
according to the solar year – Passover in spring, Pentecost in summer, and Tabernacles in autumn – it was essential to
harmonize the lunar and solar years. This was done by the ‘intercalation’ or introduction of an extra month Adar, which
made that year a leap year. There are seven such leap years, of thirteen months each, in every cycle of nineteen years.
… A renowned non-Jewish scholar declared, ‘There is nothing more perfect that in the calculation of the Jewish year.”
• In regards to the calendar, Rosh Hashanah could never be a Sunday, Wednesday, or Friday which rule secured,
among other things that the Day of Atonement did not either immediately precede or immediately follow the Sabbath
CALL - Jesus call: to call sinners to repentance - Matthew 9:13
CALLED - all Christians
CALLING - 1. God’s plan (come out of Egypt)
2. God’s timing (had to be there 400 years)
3. God’s way

CALLINGS - there is never a person who can follow the Lord without his first having been called since he will easily drop
out along the way if he has not been called
--He who comes on his own will depart on his own
--John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you”
--Romans 11:29 “The gifts and callings of God are not repented of”

CEDAR (boards of) SOS 8:9 - teaching and quiet meditation (WT)
--His death and resurrection - SOS 3:9 -humanity; tabernacle of wood
-if she is unstable and easily moved to and fro like a door, such treatment will be as impossible as unsuitable
-she will need to be enclosed with board of cedar, hedged in with restraints for her own protection - SOS 8:9
--authorities (things that stand like a tree)
• In Jewish tradition cedar wood was regarded as a symbol of human pride Leviticus 14:6
• Cedar – cypress – represents death (MG)
CEDARS AND OAKS – image for haughty nobles and princes (Isaiah 2:13)
CEMETERIES - stuff is dead
CHAFF - The chaff is on the wheat and looks like wheat. Outwardly speaking it resembles a repentant person; but
inwardly it is without self-judgment or true repentance -- because repentance is an inward change of mind or a change of
judgment. To repent means that there must be a basic, inward, constitutional, absolute change of mind: no longer
looking at self according to my own opinion, but looking at myself from the viewpoint of God.
CHAINS OF GOLD (SOS 1:10) - divine character - there’s a “yes” in your spirit to King Jesus
CHAMBER – the place where the marriage was consummated
CHAMBERS - where I may freely converse with Him and enjoy Him - a matter of our thoughts and discourses
CHANGE - primary way God uses to change His weak sin-filled Bride is to nourish and cherish her. He cherishes her in
order to take the stain of sin out of her soul. This method of changing His Bride is the only tested and proven way that
works in history.
CHANGE OF APPEARANCES - a person in unstable time
CHAOS - Holy Spirit loves chaos - an opportunity to see and bring forth a glorious new creation if see chaos watch what
the Holy Spirit can do. Some of the greatest opportunities to see God’s glory is in our place of greatest need.
Genesis 1:2
CHARACTER - the greatest personal causes of shatterings of personality and character are in childhood (Sandford)
--Jewish thought says misconstruing Torah does not stem from intellectual misconception, it is rooted in faulty character
--character you strive for -- gifts given
--sum of traits; vary and are unstable
--arranged by God
--Consciousness plus temperament = self (memory, reason, will, intelligence, sensation)
--Life in a Christian is one thing; life developed by the Lord into character is quite another. (Nee)
--Romans 5:3, 4 -- And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and
perseverance, character; and character, hope.
--The purpose of salt is to preserve things from corruption or prevent them from further deterioration. In a sinful society,
family or school, many improper things have been stopped or kept from further decadence by salty Christians. This is not
done by your propaganda, but by your character.
--a man’s inward purpose, scope, aim in life determines your character
• This world is not so much a place for doing things as for making character (AWT)
CHARACTER OF THE NEW MAN:
Put on tender mercies
Kindness
Humility
Meekness
Longsuffering
Bearing with one another
Forgiving one another
Put on love
Let the peace of God rule in your hearts
Be thankful
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom
Teach and admonish one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs
Sing with grace in your hearts to the Lord
Whatever you do, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus
Give thanks to God the Father through Him
CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD: Exodus 34:6-7
1. The Lord – I am the merciful God before a man commits a sin
2. The Lord – and I am the same merciful and forgiving God after a man has sinned
3. God – the all-mighty Lord of the universe, Ruler of Nature and mankind
4. Merciful – full of affectionate sympathy for the sufferings and miseries of human frailty
5. Gracious – assisting and helping; consoling the afflicted and raising up the oppressed. In man these two qualities
manifest themselves fitfully and temporarily. It is otherwise with God: in Him, compassion and grace are permanent,
inherent and necessary emanations of His nature.
6. Long-suffering – slow to anger; not hastening to punish the sinner, but affording him opportunities to retrace his
evil courses
7. Abounding in goodness – plenteous in mercy. Granting His gifts and blessings beyond the deserts of man
8. And Truth – eternally true to Himself, pursuing His inscrutable plans for the salvation of mankind, and rewarding
those who are obedient to His will
9. Keeping mercy to a thousand generations – remembering the good deeds of the ancestors and reserving reward
and recompense to the remotest descendants
10. Forgiving iniquity – bearing with indulgence the failings of man and by forgiveness restoring him to the original
purity of his soul. Iniquity – sins committed from evil disposition
11. Forgiving transgression and sin – evil deeds springing from malice and rebellion against the Divine; shortcomings
due to heedlessness and error
12. Will by no means clear the guilty – He will not allow the guilty to pass unpunished; acquitting the penitent but not
acquitting the impenitent. He is merciful and gracious and forgiving; but He will never obliterate the eternal and
unbridgeable distinction between light and darkness, between good and evil. God cannot leave repeated wickedness
and obstinate persistence in evil entirely unpunished. His goodness cannot destroy His justice. The sinner must suffer
the consequences of his misdeeds. The unfailing and impartial consequences of sin help man to perceive that there is
no ‘chance’ in morals. The punishments of sin are thus not vindictive, but remedial.
13. Visiting upon the children – this law relates only to the consequences of sin. Pardon is not the remission of the
penalty, but the forgiveness of the guilt and the removal of the sinfulness. The misdeeds of those who are God’s enemies
are visited only to the third and fourth generation, whereas His mercy to those who love Him is unto a thousand
generations.
CHARCOAL - Peter denied the Lord three times over a charcoal fire. There is only one other charcoal fire mentioned in
the New Testament and it is after the Resurrection when Jesus appears to them while fishing and Jesus prepares a
charcoal fire for them ... Immediately Peter swam to shore and came face to face with another charcoal fire and must
have remembered the last time he saw one. Resurrection bodies can cook breakfast for unresurrected bodies.
CHARIOT - King’s chariot (SOS 3:7-8) picture of Jesus redemption
--a place of God
--rising in a chariot - God has a celestial destiny for you; something for you to accomplish
--if others in with you, they will help accomplish it
CHARITY - love of God for Himself above all creatures
CHASTEN - correct by instruction
Tighten the rope -- limit freedom to do as please
ß
Only done at night (time of spiritual darkness)
ß
He seems to withdraw the feeling of His presence and all the things of our requests
CHASTISEMENT - the sinner at one and the same time winces under the rod and learns righteousness. (see convict)
CHASTITY or continence – a chaste individual is no longer dominated by the desire to have sensually pleasing
experiences. Rather than trying to please himself, he tries to please God. About this St. Clement of Alexandria
(150-215 AD) wrote: for continence is not merely a matter of sexual abstinence, but applies also to the other things for
which the soul has an evil desire because it is not satisfied with the necessities of life. There is also a continence of the
tongue, of money, of use, and of desire. It does not only teach us to exercise self-control; it is rather that self-control is
granted to us, since it is a divine power and grace.
CHEATING - prophesying things you already know in the natural
CHEEKS - emotion (SOS 1:10 & 5:13) - a person’s countenance/emotions - reflected in their cheeks - they are windows.
Reveal emotional makeup, passions, pleasures -- hidden beauty
CHIHUAHUA - if in dream means someone talking all the time
CHILD - teachable
--if dream you are a child - issues from childhood
CHILDREN - new coming; new ideas, ministry
--You are here because you have learned to see, to evaluate, and to seek understanding in everything. This is the eye of
the child. As long as you keep it I can teach you, and I can lead you.
• As little children: humble, obedient, docile, leave everything to the care of the Father, the child of a rich man will
play with the child of a poor man with no distinction (act among themselves as if all were equal), without worldly ambition,
without lust of power, sincere hearts, trusting, unpretentious
• We will know that we have arrived at apostolic verity and reality corporately, when we will have persuaded our own
children! And the fact that we haven’t, as yet, has had a toll beyond anything that we can conceive. Our present
satisfaction and willingness to abide in something less than the sacrificial intention of God has come about because we
have languished in and have loved the wrong side because its grasses are flourishing that feed our flesh. This has cost
the kingdom of God incalculably in virtually every home. (AK)
• Like children who are prepared to receive the kingdom as a gift of God
• Character of children is trust and receptiveness
• Children allow people to give them things apart from any thought of merit or desert on their part
• Children exhibit sincerity, eagerness, a trusting attitude, and total dependence on their parents
CHIP OFF OF BLOCK - like you are going into ministry like your father
CHITTUM WOOD - incorruptible; doesn’t decay
CHRISTMAS SCENE - if dream of this something may happen next Christmas; a time frame
CHOICE - As the lover said of her bridegroom “I sat down under his shadow with great delight” (SOS 2:3). This must be
a deliberate choice, wherein the soul seriously weighs the covenant Christ offers and then chooses Him.
CHOICES - Philippians 2 says Jesus won this position by His choices. You can tell a man’s character by His choices.
Jesus made three choices which showed He could be trusted with the entire power in the universe. First choice: to
become a human being. What that must have meant to the divine Son. he was the only person who chose to be born.
Therefore you didn’t chose your parents, your social standing you were born in to. Jesus chose His parents and chose
the social level He would be brought up in. He chose not a palace but a carpenter’s shop. He chose to serve people. He
took the form of a slave. Washing the feet was kept for the lowest servant. The second lowest servant was to take the
shoes off, lose the sandals. John the Baptist said I am not worthy to lose the sandal (I don’t feel worthy to be the second
bottom servant). But the One he talked about chose to be the bottom slave. Peter was horrified - it’s not Your place.
--He chose to die at the age of 33. Quite voluntary. Died the most shameful, horrid death, stark naked and laughed
at. And He chose all that. And God said, that’s My man. Now God has a human being He can trust.
CHOSEN - 1 Corinthians 1:27, 28 chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; chosen the weak things
of the world to shame the things which are strong; He has chosen the base things of the world and the despised;
the things that are not, that He might nullify the things that are --honor to be chosen
--I have been chosen/appointed (1 Timothy 2:7) #5087
--those who have pressed on to know the Lord Himself
-- As the devil chooses to come with his temptations to those that are idle, so Christ chooses to come with His calls to
those that are employed.
CHOSEN BY GOD:
Salvation (know Jesus as Savior; call to believe)
Call to follow (know Jesus as Lord)
Call to come out
Ministry of Christianity:
Peter - occupation of fishing - a ministry of fishers of men
Paul - occupation of tentmaker - a ministry of building
John - occupation of mending nets - a ministry of restoring to new
CHRIST – literally means the “Anointed One’. According to St. Cyril of Alexandria (378-444 AD): …if one uses the name
‘Christ’ one does not mean the pure Word or an ordinary man like one of us, but, as I said, the incarnate Word of God the
Father anointed.
CHRISTIANITY - a revelation of what is, what was, what will be (RM)
--(Nee) Let us not despise the testing of the Lord. For through testing the life within us is manifested. The greater
the demands of God are upon this divine life, the greater is the manifestation of what is in this life. It is God who
commands, but it is also God, by His divine life within us, who keeps the commandment. God Himself fulfills what He
demands .... When we believers go ahead to follow the teaching on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7, we unconsciously
fulfill it. The impossibilities become possibilities. And precisely this is what it is to be Christian, the daily showing forth of
what is impossible in oneself ... Romans 6:14 says that this which we have in Matthew 5-7 is what is truly under grace.
The teaching on the Mount creates for this world many individuals whom this world is not worthy to have. It is not
enough for these persons just to have life. There also needs to be a demand upon this life; otherwise, this divine life will
not be manifested. This life is able to meet every one of the challenges of the teaching on the Mount! Without such
demand, the exceedingly great power of the Lord in us may not be expressed. But when there is this demand, and that
demand is met in the lives of men, then there is truly Christianity. On the one hand there is testing, on the other hand
there is the supply of Christ. And when both are present, there is Christianity, there is the kingdom of the heavens.
CHRISTIANS – There are three basic categories of Christians. The largest group are those who perceive the world’s sin
and corruption and consider it is impossible to change. They evaluate their spiritual capabilities and conclude they are
nearly powerless to transform the world around them. Unable to cope, they retreat into what seems to be a shelter of
apathy. Yet most are not truly apathetic. Their souls, like Lot’s (2 Peter 2:7-8), inwardly grieve at the conduct of
unprincipled men around them. Without spiritual resources, however, their flame has diminished to the size of their
immediate family and needs.
The second class of Christians consists of those who would rather rail at the storm of evil than hide from it. Though
smaller in number than the first, they are by no means apathetic; in fact, they appear exactly opposite. They rage at the
depravity of the ungodly and protest the audacity of the wicked. They pound pulpits and sidewalks; they are both vocal
and visible. Ye their ability to effect positive societal change has been, for the most part, neutralized by their negativity
and rage. They are characterized and then dismissed as judgmental extremists. Most sinners simply cannot endure the
harshness of their approach.
Both groups sincerely desire to see our culture transformed. Ye the same problem afflicts them: they are troubled
that the world is unchristian, without being troubled that their own hearts are un-Christlike. They do not perceive the
priority of God’s heart, which is the transformation of the church into the image of Christ.
World Changers Needed – It is this focused passion, to be conformed to Christ, that separates the third group from
the others. Though smallest in number, its members are the most effective. Throughout history, these have been the
world changers. These are the individuals that have understood the priority of God. They know that the highest
expression of the Father’s will to behold His Son revealed in a believers life. As much as they are moved with compassion
for the lost, their primary quest is not to touch their neighbors’ hearts, but to touch the heart of God. They know if they
awaken the Father’s pleasure, the power of His Spirit will go before them. God Himself will change the hearts of those
around.
• The main business of a Christian lies within, to get cleansed from the filthiness of the spirit. Those sins must be
conscientiously abstained from, which the ye of God only is a witness to, who searches the heart. If the heart be well
kept, all is well, for “out of it are the issues of life”
CHURCH on Sunday - in Old Testament rest was a reward for your work. In New Testament you start in rest and then
work out your salvation. Jacob marrying Leah and then Rachel are a type of this.
CIRCUMCISION - tender comes when you are circumcised. We are talking of the circumcision of the soul this year.
When you are circumcised it doesn’t take much prompting of the Holy Spirit to turn you to His purposes.
• Circumcision and Passover belong together; the former is the sign of Israel’s election, and of God’s covenant with
His people; the latter is a sign of the fulfillment of the covenant on God’s part
• Since circumcision is the symbol of the covenant between God and the child, the child was spoken of as the
‘bridegroom’ of the covenant Exodus 4:22
CIRCUMSTANCES - every circumstance in life, no matter how crooked and distorted and ugly it appears to be, if it is
reacted to in love and forgiveness and obedience to your will can be transformed.
--Circumstances prearranged for me by the Lord (see situations); problems not a result of our making.
CITIES - In the bible generally, cities are bad places. They have a bad history. They are first mentioned in connection
with Lemech, the first man to forge weapons of mass destruction, a descendant of Cain. Cities began on the wrong side
of the family tree. They are bad because they concentrate people, and therefore concentrate sinners and sin. Big cities
have a peculiar habit of concentrating sin and that is why they become dangerous places. For example, lust is
concentrated in cities. Over half of homosexuals in England live in London. Anger, violence, and rioting take place in
big cities. (DP)
CITY - Corporate church (city of God)
CLAMOR - the disturbance we cause by the agitation of our soul that is the result of bitterness, wrath, and anger
CLEFT OF THE ROCK - Jesus is the rock of God. Finished work of the Cross
--the wounds in the side of Christ at crucifixion
--we are hidden in His wounds

--The Hebrews considered holiness as the garb of the soul, and evil actions as stains or spots on this garb
CLOUDS - what color? white or dark. Then know who from.

COASTLANDS – Gentiles Genesis 10:5, Isaiah 49:1
COAT - protection or insulation

COCKROACHES - going after things left unattended
CO-DEPENDENCY (Blame shifting)
I am expecting you to be something to me that only God can be to fill up the deficiency I am now experiencing and
I am blaming you for my experiencing it. That I am expecting you to become something to me that only God can be to
me -- so that you can fill up a deficiency within my character I now feel and I am blaming you for my being deficient. Worship the
creature rather than the Creator.
COFFIN – the same Hebrew word is sued of the receptacle of the Tables of the Law. This is significant. Judaism
preaches respect for human personality as a duty, because man has it in his power to become a living embodiment of
the Moral Law. The Rabbis tell: the nations wondered why the children of Israel, in their wanderings through the desert,
carried with them the bones of Joseph in a similar ark and in the same reverential manner as they did the Tables of the
Covenant. “He whose remains are preserved in the one ark”, they answered, “loyally obeyed the Divine commands
enshrined in the other.” Genesis 50:26
COINCIDENCE OF CONTRADICTORIES - the coincidence of opposites is a certain kind of unity perceived as
coincidence, a unity of contrarieties overcoming opposition by convergence without destroying or merely blending the
constituent elements. Although in one sense not obliterated, in another the constituent elements shed their multiple,
differentiated status. Examples would include the coincidence of rest and motion, past and future, diversity and identity,
inequality and equality, and divisibility and simplicity.
Coincidence does not really describe God. Rather it sets forth the way God works, the order of things in relation to
God and to each other, and the manner by which humans may approach and abide in God. God is beyond the realm of
contradictories. God … preceded opposites, is undifferentiated, not other, incomparable, and without opposite, precedes
distinctions, opposition, contrariety, and contradiction.
COLLISIONS in life not His displeasure. Produce something in my heart worth more; my life in eternity settled by my
reactions to collisions. He wants Divine dilemma and tensions. When don’t see results you want, it’s a heart test.
Produces a revelation of Sovereignty.

COMMANDMENTS
• First table duties have in them more of the essence of religion, yet second –table duties have in them more of the
evidence of it. Our light burns in love to God, but it shines in love to our neighbor
• From this we may learn that God’s great design in giving His law to the Jews was to lead them to the expectation
and enjoyment of eternal life. Matthew 19:17
• Commandments of the second table:
1. First, that which concerns our own and our neighbor’s life
2. Second, our own and our neighbor’s chastity
3. Third, our own and our neighbor’s wealth and outward estate
4. Fourth, that which concerns truth, and our own and our neighbor’s good name
5. Fifth, that which concerns duties of particular relations
6. Sixth, the comprehensive law of love in which they are all fulfilled.

--Commitment is not something you, it’s who you are regardless of circumstances. Commitment to God is who you
are when everything is going pear shaped around you. If you are not the same when everything is going wrong as when
everything is going right, your Christianity is not worth much.

COMPASS FOR THE LAST DAYS (RJ):
1. Our main goal should be to understand what God is doing, not what the devil is doing
2. The tragedies and destruction that come upon the world are the result of man trying to live without God, and in
rebellion to Him
3. True discernment is based on love, not hatred or fear
4. Our reason for being here in these times is to fulfill the Great Commission
COMPASSION - a spiritual force that moves you to do something/help (pity just a feeling but doesn’t mean you’ll help) --

CONDEMNATION - spiritual pride – don’t believe God can forgive us (MB)
CONFIDENCE - know what you want; sure about how to get it
CONFIRMATION - God’s method of confirmation:

--need to go from ceaseless thought to unceasing communion with God
--conscience is an expression of wisdom (MH p736)
--Consciousness = revelation = realizes = prophesy
--Holy Spirit confirms to our conscience (Tozer)
--Consciousness = physical mind
--True Christianity lies in the heart, it begins in a “heart sprinkled from an evil conscience” or a “conscience purged from
dead works”. The conscience thus purged - the heart thus sprinkled - there is light within wherewith to see God.
--the regulative faculty
--Genesis 9 - Tree of Knowledge of good and evil = Tree of Conscience. The expression “good and evil” denotes the
knowledge which infancy lacks and experience acquires. (Deuteronomy 1:39)
--Genesis 3:7 - the eyes of their conscience were opened (at the fall)
--A good conscience is the vessel faith sails in. If the conscience is wrecked, how can faith be safe? Now you know what sins
destroy the conscience -- sins deliberately committed or impenitently repeated. Guard against these deliberate sins.
Like a stone thrown into a clear stream, they will so muddy the conscience that you cannot see the reflection of the
promise.
--Lukewarm mistaken for a safe state; brought within reach of the holy fire without being heated by it into fervor; having
religion enough to lull the conscience in false security, but not religion enough to save the soul.
--The eye is the conscience or inner light of the mind (Revelation 3:18)
--In the same way as light causes the eye to focus on an object, fiath uncovers sin in the conscience. Thoughts
soon arise like clouds and thicken into a storm until they fill the soul with heavy black horror and trembling for sin. But at
this point the person is at a loss and cannot go any further into repentance until faith sends in more support from the
promise of pardon. When the sinner hears and believes the promise, repentance can continue. And finally, the cloud of
terror which the fear of wrath had gathered in the conscience dissolves into a soft rain of evangelical sorrow (WG)
--The spirit of God convicts the conscience. When the Comforter comes “He will reprove the world of sin”
John 16:8. Now this conviction of the conscience is nothing but reflection of the light which is in the understanding.
Because of it the sinner feels the weight and force of those things he knows are wrong in his life; yet how many are
convinced enough to apply repentance to their consciences?
--Has the Spirit of God put His golden key into the lock of your will, to open the door of your heart and let Christ the
King of Glory in? Has He opened the eye of your understanding, as He awakened Peter asleep in prison, and caused
the chains of dullness to fall off your conscience?
- a good conscience warns you of things BEFORE
-a slumbering conscience warns afterwards
-a bad conscience not at all
-a slumbering caused by lack of love or lack of responding to worship and hardening of heart results
-conscience is my link to God speaking to me
-co-perception (me and Holy Spirit); together perceiving
-Your conscience is the voice of the Holy Spirit
-Romans 9:1 conscience bearing witness in the Holy Ghost
-Psalm 16:7,8 heart instructs in the night season
-The office of conscience: wisdom Job 38:36 (Page 736 MH, Proverbs 1:20)
-Overindulging the appetites (overcharged) of the body stupify the conscience, and cause the mind to be unaffected
with those things that are most affecting
-If it were not for the presence of the Holy Spirit speaking through the consciences of men and women, no other
voice would have any significance. (Tozer)
--Holy Spirit is the very nature of the Godhead subsisting in a form that can impart itself into our
--the eye - understanding - practical judgment which is to the other faculties of the soul as the eye is to the body, to
guide and direct their motions (Matthew 6:23)
• We must distinguish between our carnal concupiscence and conscience; between deluded imaginations and
conscience; between an erroneous and scrupulous conscience, and a well-grounded and truly informed conscience; and
when we have done so, we must follow conscience as far as that follows the Word
• Conscience is the voice of the Spirit reasoning voice intellect/wind feeling voice/body
• Office of conscience – Genesis 42:21 “We are guilty – as time will not wear out the guilt of sin, so it will not blot out
the records of conscience. The benefit of afflictions: they often prove the happy and effectual means of awakening
conscience. Their consciences had been lulled asleep to the present hour. God combines and brings about those
favorable circumstances which produce attention and reflection and give weight to the expostulations of conscience.
The drift of their conversation is one of the most striking instances on record of the power of conscience.
• The repetition of Pharaoh’s persistent obstinacy made it less likely that he would eventually listen to the word of
God. For such is the law of conscience: every time the voice of conscience is disobeyed, it becomes duller and feebler,
and the heart grows harder. Man cannot remain neutral in the presence of Duty or of any direct command of God.
• The Spirit is Himself God, the very true Nature of the Godhead subsisting in a form that can impart Himself to our
consciousness (AWT)
• The voice of conscience is the voice of God (MH)
CONSCIOUSNESS. We know only as much of the other Persons of the Trinity as He (Holy Spirit) reveals to us.
--Consciousness plus temperament = self (memory, reason, will, intelligence, sensation)
CONSECRATE - (Isaiah 13:3) kadash = to make holy, consecrate, appoint. Consecrated to a purpose. Designed and
set apart by the purpose and providence of God. My designated ones.
CONSECRATION - The pure in heart have but one aim: to serve God and to please Him and also to live for others.
In this matter of seeing, let us note that it is not governed by thought but by the heart. It is based on our consecration
and obedience, not on our cleverness and comprehension..... Please take note that it does not require an object as large
as the earth to conceal the moonlight; oftentimes a single leaf can hide the light of the moon. So it is with the heart. A
slight slant of the heart will cause spiritual blindness. Seeing is not the result of thinking through, it comes from having a
pure heart. Singleness of heart is the test of absolute surrender. All whose consecration is not absolute are blind, but
the pure in heart can see. Consecration is the sole condition for seeing the truth, whereas the slightest reservation can
produce a different view. Man’s opinion follows his intention, not his brain. Absolute surrender alone guarantees the
ability to see. (Nee)
• There wee two rams brought on this occasion: one was for a burnt offering and was to be entirely consumed; the
other was the ram of consecration – the ‘ram of filling up” because when a person was dedicated or consecrated to God
his hands were filled with some particular offering proper for the occasion, which he presented to God. Hence the word
“consecration” signifies the “filling up or filling the hands”. Exodus 29:19
CONSOLATIONS - a warm feeling of the Lord’s presence, positive experiences
• In devoting herself to God, the soul rejects the comforts and consolation offered by material things, worldly honor,
human relationships, etc. And God in turn encourages her in this self-denial by consoling the soul spiritually. At first
these consolations are somewhat analogous to perceptual experiences; nonetheless they are not mediated by physical
sense organs. It’s as if every sensory channel had a spiritual counterpart. The soul may feel inwardly “touched” by God,
or perhaps it may feel as though it’s being inwardly anointed. The soul may feel as though it is in motion or expanding.
The eyes of the soul may suddenly see an interior light; or they may perceive spiritual realities that can’t be described in
terms of shape, brightness, or color, but which seem to be “seen” nonetheless. The same goes for the other senses.
In most cases it is almost impossible to describe in words what is in fact being perceived in these experiences, since there
Is nothing in the material world that’s similar. Ye the individual retains a strong conviction that he or she is experiencing
something in a spiritual manner, and this “perceptual” experience is typically accompanied by feelings of great peace,
love, and delight. As David says, “O taste and see that the Lord is good” – Psalm 34:8.
When the individual goes for some length of time without worldly consolations (because of his self-denial) and without
spiritual consolations (because these are truly “gifts” from God and He sends them when He wills), the individual is said to
experience “aridity”. At first individuals tend to chafe, grumble, and complain when God withdraws these consolations.
However as the individual’s love for God becomes more pure and less tainted with self-interest, these consolations
become less important. Over time the individual gradually learns to joyfully abandon himself to whatever God wills for him
because he trusts in God’s goodness. This eventually leads to a state where God communicates Himself directly to the
inner most center of the soul, without this experience being mediated through any physical or spiritual sensations. Yet
the soul knows that God is present with greater conviction than it has ever known anything else.
CONSUMING FIRE - “Our God is a consuming fire.” If the Holy Ghost takes possession of our body, then His life will
consume all that there is of ours.
CONTEMPLATION - simple gazing on the Divine beauty
-continual keeping of one’s attention on the Lord
-looking to no one else
-pausing and resting in the sacred presence
-awareness of Him through the night
-light-giving pondering
-perfect wisdom, spiritual understanding, fullest knowledge
-Divinely originated, general, non-conceptual, loving awareness of God
-highest prayer to have one’s whole heart, soul and mind filled to overflowing with the love of God
-a complete identification with God in love
-greatest commandment to perfection (maturity) when one walks lovesick for God
-flesh and heart pining with love and joy is to be near God
-a deep love communion with the Triune God. By depth is meant a knowing loving that we cannot produce but only receive.
A wordless awareness and love that we of ourselves cannot initiate or prolong. Divinely produced or
poured in by God--the very reward of living a virtuous life.
-God ordinarily reveals His indwelling presence not through visions but by prompting virtuous actions within us (as water in a
boiling pot bubbling, so we bubble with good works by the Divine Fire within)
--Contemplation is nothing else than a secret and peaceful loving inflow of God which, if not hampered, fires the soul in the
spirit of love
--Quieting your soul and emptying yourself of lower concepts of God so he can reveal Himself to your spirit as He really is.
CONTEMPLATION LIFE (Bernard)
-faith and works; love and its fruits; charity and its marvels; union with God by contemplation and love; union with men by
action and charity
CONTROL SPIRIT - it is a counterfeit spiritual authority
(1) Parades itself as spiritual authority
(2) Bible refers to it as witchcraft (sorcery)
(3) Using a spirit other than the Holy Spirit to dominate, manipulate, or control others
(4) A work of the flesh that can become demonic
(5) God does not use soul power or hype
(6) Carnal men respond to carnal authority
(7) God rules with a calling and wooing
(8) To be free of witchcraft we have to be free of it ourselves
CONTROLLING SPIRIT - subjecting yourself to an influence you allow which your conscience doesn’t approve or not
do that your conscience approves
CONVICT/CONVINCE - “elencho” John 16:8 (the Holy Ghost) will convince the world of sin” - rebuke unto conviction;
“paideu” - instruct by chastisement - Hebrews 12:5, 6. David was rebuked unto conviction when he cried “I have sinned
against the Lord”. The chastisement followed when his child was taken from him. In chastisement the sinner at one
and the same time winces under the rod and learns righteousness.
CONVICTION:
First - a convicted sinner is convicted not of one particular sin only, but of the evil of all sin.
Second - the convicted sinner is convicted of the state of sin as well as of acts of sin.
Third - the convicted sinner not only condemns himself for what he has done and for what he is, but he realizes he
cannot do anything to save himself. Although many condemned people will go so far as to confess their sin and
wickedness, they hope to cut the rope from their neck at the last minute by repentance and good works. This attitude
surfaces because the plow of conviction has not gone deep enough to tear up those secret roots of self-confidence.
If you cling to the self-confidence of repentance and reformation, they will betray you into the hands of God’s justice and
wrath. But if you have turned away from this religious self-confidence, you have escaped one of the finest snares that
the wit of hell can weave.
Fourth - not only is the convicted sinner so convicted that he knows he is helpless, but he welcomes the full provision laid up
in Christ for him.
CORD - see threefold
CORN/heads of - years Genesis 41:26
CORRUPT COMMUNICATION
--anything that is anti-Word
--unbelief about another person’s life or situation
--talking negatively about others
--not going to change people by griping about them
--When you gripe and complain and criticize family members, you destroy your love for them and wreck your faith, because
faith works by love
CORRUPTION - manifested itself in the development of ferocity (Genesis 9:12)
COUCH - gospel (SOS 3:7) carries us into Kingdom/heaven
COUNSELS - poverty, chastity, obedience
COUNTED WORTHY - counted worthy of the Kingdom of God...for which you also suffer - 2 Thessalonians 1:5
COVENANTS - Blood covenants are entered into between equals; but Abram had nothing to offer God, so God
acted alone
--Genesis 15: God’s covenants with man are made by sacrifice (Psalm 1:5), by Christ, the great sacrifice; no agreement
without atonement. God’s acceptance of our spiritual sacrifices is an earnest of further favors.
--Almost all nations in forming alliances made covenants in this manner: a sacrifice was provided, its throat was cut,
and its blood poured out before God; then the whole carcass was divided through the spinal marrow from the head to the
rump; so as to make exactly two equal parts; these were placed opposite to each other, and the contracting parties
passed between them, or entering at opposite ends met in the center, and there took the covenant oath. This is
particularly referred to by Jeremiah 34:18-20 and Deuteronomy 29:12
Third Covenant - Genesis 8:21-22
COVENANT OF ABRAHAM - Genesis 17
exceedingly fruitful make nations of you kings shall come from you establish covenant
between Me and you AND your descendants Galatians 3:14 - Abraham’s blessings ours
--God put Abraham to sleep (Genesis 15:12-21) - God’s covenant is unconditional. We are not involved. It does not
depend on our works. God does it.
COVENANT OF SALT - Numbers 18:19
salt = season or preserve; full of life, vigor, to enrich by secretly placing
2 Chronicles 13:5, Lev 2:13, Ezek 43:24; Matt 5:13, Mark 9:49-50, Matt 3:11, Col 4:6, Luke 14:34
--The doctrine of the gospel is as salt; it is penetrating, it reaches the heart. It is cleansing, it is relishing, and preserves
from putrefaction.
--An everlasting covenant is called a covenant of salt (Numbers 18:19); and the gospel is an everlasting gospel (MH)
--Salt was required in all the sacrifices
--The remedy for the world, says our Lord, is the active presence of his disciples among their fellows. The character
and principles of Christians, brought into close contact with the world, are designed to arrest the festering corrupting of
humanity and season its insipidity (Matthew 5;13)
--Salt operates internally - in the mass with which it comes in contact; the sunlight operates eternally, irradiating all
that it reaches.
COVET – to covet is not just to have a passing thought; it is a determination to seize what is not one’s own
COWS = years Genesis 41:26
CRAFTINESS - using human wisdom to bend the rules, to try to get an edge.
CRAFTY - The first characteristic given to the serpent that caused the first fall of man. Craftiness is the tendency to try to
bend the rules and get away with it.
CREDIBILITY GAP - He lives in our credibility gap. That’s where He lives: between reality and hypocrisy
CRITICISM - has incredible power
CRITICIZE - to criticize is one thing, to help is another. Criticizing is costless, but helping is costly.
CROSS -
--Take up cross and follow me: (Amplified) = cleave steadfastly to Me, conforming wholly to My example in living and
if need be, in dying also.
--Putting off of the flesh with its passions and lusts
--our cross = lose sight of yourself and your own interests
--”If” cross: (it is something within our ability to chose/not a physical handicap)
1. Can ignore
2. Take up
3. Put down
Revelation and experience --> cross (embrace cross of the situation/released to move to next step) -->
circumstances prearranged by the Lord --> test of obedience concerning willingness to obey (exposes
self-will thru the suffering) --> fellowship of suffering
--One of the things that the mystics say is that when we run into trials one of the first instincts we have is to flee from
them - how can I get around them. Our second tendency is to accept them as we grow in spiritual maturity. But the third
stage is to love them - to know the great good that God is accomplishing in our soul through trials and dryness and
temptation. To love what God is doing. We first flee from the Cross, we next accept the Cross, but the Lord is leading us
to love the Cross because it is the instrument of our salvation - it is the means of our purification and transformation.
And the Cross comes in the circumstances of life, it can be an entire circumstance of dryness and desolation, it could be
exterior circumstances of bodily illness, losing a job, death of a loved one, failure, embarrassment, humiliation,
accusation, big ways and small ways. Each trial is an opportunity. James 1 “Count it all joy my brothers when you
meet trials of various kinds ...” That is pretty advanced. Because of what the trials will produce: steadfastness, strength
of soul - as you patiently persevere in the midst.
• When is the cross the heaviest? On the way of bearing it. When is it no longer heavy? When you are hung on it.
When the cross itself bears you, you will not feel heaviness anymore, for you have died, so you feel no pain. If you
have truly died to self you will feel no yoke at all. This yokeless yoke is easy. The burdenless burden is light. (Nee)
Matthew 11:30
• Crosses in an evil course are God’s hedges to turn us from it. Restraining grace and restraining providences are
great blessings when they stop us in a course of sin
CROWN - God crowns man:
Psalm 8:5 You have crowned him.
--God didn’t ask Gabriel or Michael to do it. God Himself arose and crowned His man. In crowning God fixed
forever the place of man in God’s heart and in God’s plan.
--You have crowned with glory (Psalm 8:5)
--emblem of Kingdom
CROWNS OF GOLD - wreaths of victory
CRUCIFIXION - up until the cross and the first three hours His concern was for other people. For the last three hours
His concern was for what he was experiencing. And the first thing He said was “I am thirsty”. Hell is a very thirsty place.
His second concern is “I’m alone”. In hell God will have left you. He went through hell. It is a very dark place. Dark
because God is not there. He went through hell on our behalf so we would never have to experience it. Crucifixion never
killed anyone in six hours. It takes two days minimum and seven days maximum. Jesus said He laid His life down Himself.
When God said “That’s enough”. He cried out “It’s finished” -- its over. And then He prayed a prayer that He had been
taught as a little boy at Mary’s knee (Psalm 30:6) “Into Your hands I commit My spirit” -- and added one word: “Father,
into Your hands ...” How could He go through this? He went through it for the joy set before Him. He could see beyond
the present suffering.
CRY – they used many good words, but they did not cry with their heart, and therefore God reckons it as no crying to
Him Hosea 7:14
CUP - sufferings (Matthew 26:39) sorrow, anguish, terror, death (Psalm 75:8; Ezekiel 23:31-34)
--allusion to criminals being forced to drink cup of poison
--lot of life
--a small matter relatively
--wrath of God (Isaiah 51:17, 22; Jeremiah 25:15)
CUP OF WINE - the symbol of God’s anger to be drunk to the dregs to some people. That is why Jesus prayed in
Gethsemane that he didn’t want to drink this cup. It was to be the focus of the anger of God. He had never known the
anger of God before.
CUP OF WRATH – it is not the outworking of impersonal laws of retribution, but the response of a righteous God to those
who refuse His love and grace (NIV)
CURSE - original curse: bring forth by sweat of brow
-TDJ - Your angry reactions to cruelties of life can bring a curse on you (Genesis 49:5)
CUT OFF – Daniel 9:26 – means a violent death (MB)
CYPRESS - death (SOS 1:16)
