BACKBONES - splitting backbones:  almost all nations in forming alliances made covenants in this manner:  a sacrifice was
provided, its throat was cut, and its blood poured out before God; then the whole carcass was divided through the spinal
marrow from the head to the rump; so as to make exactly two equal parts; these were placed opposite to each other, and t
he contracting parties passed between them, or entering at opposite ends met in the center, and there took the covenant
oath.  This is particularly referred to by Jeremiah 34:18-20 and Deuteronomy 29:12.

BAPTISM - It is through baptism - all of their enemies were destroyed.  The one place the enemy cannot follow you is into
baptism.  Water baptism is a symbolic ritual that represents a spiritual reality.  The spiritual reality is represented by water
baptism.
--Repent means to ask Jesus if there is anything in your life that You don’t like, and then cut it out.  Prove your
repentance by your deeds.  The New Testament approach is to baptize only when proof of repentance  has been shown.
You don’t baptize on profession of faith.  Repentance means change, turn around, walk away from wrong things you are
doing.
--In baptism they stood before God on the right ground sinners.  They abdicated the false position of the  righteous -
considering themselves unworthy to be called the children of Abraham - and recognized that they were totally unfit to see
God’s face.  Accordingly, they should not remain on earth to be seen by God but be forever buried in water from the sight
of God. (Nee)
--To stand in the place of death, thus having no position before God.
--John’s baptism was to repentance.  The Christian baptism is being baptized unto Christ.

--won’t be bothered by it even in front of people

--The Jewish prayer room has a prayer to pray when you go to the bathroom.  They pray when you go to the toilet.
To the average western Christian with Greek thinking, this is blasphemous.  The God of Israel is as interested in what you
do in the toilet as what you do in church or you haven’t understood Him because He made your physical body and He is
concerned about it.  The books in the Christian toilet are designed to keep you on a spiritual high, not to address why
you are in that room.  The prayer the Jews use is “Lord, I thank you that my body is working properly.  And I thank you
that I feel better and I feel relieved.” (Pawson)

BATHSHEBA - stands for eternal security.  She was not returned to Uriah after she came to David.  God never sends a

BEATING UP SOMEBODY - you are forcing something on somebody; lead don’t push

BEATITUDES
--Time, Money, Food/Physical Strength - what they are about
--The first principle of the Kingdom of Heaven (JGL):
--Blessed are the Poor in Spirit
--Blessed is he who regards the interests of the kingdom of heaven as paramount to every other interest in the
world, paramount to his own personal interest.
--Blessed is he whose interest in life, whose interest in the world is only used to extend the interest of the kingdom
of heaven.
--Blessed is he who has lost his own identity as an individual and has become a citizen of the kingdom
--Blessed is he who sees the kingdom of heaven as the ultimate, to be possessed
--Blessed is he who forgets to hoard wealth for himself, but who uses all he has and all he is for the extension of
he kingdom of heaven.  It is putting the law of the love of God of one another in  practice.
--The miracle of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost was it produced such intense unselfishness in the hearts of all baptized,
moved by God into one family.
--The Second principle of the Kingdom (JGL)
                        Blessed are they that mourn
--This figure taken from the old prophets who when the nation sinned, took upon themselves the responsibility of the
nation.  They became intercessors between God and man.  In some instances in the Word, we read where God looked and
wondered.  He wondered that there was no intercessor.
--When prophet got down to confess he would say “Lord God, WE are unworthy”. He was big enough to take the whole
blame, the entire responsibility, and go down before God and lay the whole matter before God, until the blessed mercy of God
was again given to the people.
--The Beatitudes is about the Law of the Harvest. JPJ

BEATITUDES
        All seven of these features are inward dispositions of character, since all of them refer to the person himself, not to
the deeds of the person.  They have learned their lessons to such a degree that they eventually become such men.  These
are in very truth the possessors of the kingdom of the heavens.  (Nee)
        The environment of the kingdom, which is seen and prophetically described in the Old Testament
      1.  Poor in spirit
      2.  Mourn
      3.  Meek
      4.  Hunger and thirst for righteousness
      5.  Merciful
      6.  Pure in heart
      7.  Peacemakers
        The power and glory of the kingdom, which are the seven blessings herein promised
      1.  Theirs is the kingdom of heaven
      2.  They shall be comforted
      3.  They shall inherit the earth
      4.  They shall be filled
      5.  They shall obtain mercy
      6.  They shall see God
      7.  They shall be called the sons of God
        Actually only seven characteristics - the eighth is a description of what happens to the ones who possess them.
Seven being a perfect number.
        First four represent those conscious of their need of salvation and acting suitably to that character, than as possessed
of it.
        1 - Poor in spirit - a frame of mind those who in their deepest consciousness realize their entire need.  This self-
emptying conviction, that before God we are void of everything, lies at the foundation of all spiritual excellence, according
to the teaching of Scripture.
        2 - Mourning - That entire feeling which the sense of our spiritual poverty begets; it is a complement of the first
beatitude.  The one is the intellectual, the other emotional aspect of the same thing.  It is poverty of spirit that says, “I am
undone”; and it is the mourning which this causes that makes it break forth in the form of a lamentation “Woe is me!  For
I am undone.”  Religion, according to the bible, is neither a set of intellectual convictions nor a bundle of emotional
feelings, but a compound of both, the former giving birth to the latter.
        3.  Meek - it is impossible that the “poor in spirit” and “the mourners” in Zion should not at the same time be
“meek”; that is to say, persons of a lowly and gentle carriage.  Jesus said “Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me;
for I am meek and lowly in heart; and you shall find rest unto your souls”  (Matthew 11:29).  Like the meek One “when
reviled, it reviles not again; when it suffers, it threatens not; but commits itself to Him that judges righteously” -
1 peter 1:19-22
        4 - Hunger and thirst after righteousness - Those whose deepest cravings are after spiritual blessings
        The next three represent those who having now found salvation are conducting themselves accordingly
        5 - Merciful - God’s method is to awaken in us compassion towards our fellow men by His own exercise of it in so
stupendous a way and measure towards ourselves
        The Christian stands in a middle point between a mercy received and a mercy yet needed.  Sometimes the first is
urged upon him as an argument for showing mercy - “forgiving one another, as Christ forgave you”; sometimes the last
blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy”.  Thus, while he is ever to look back on the mercy received as the
source and motive of the mercy which he shows, he also looks forward to the mercy which he yet needs, and which he
is assured that the merciful of the kingdom of God shall receive, as a new provocation to its abundant exercise.
        The foretastes and beginnings of this judicial recompense are richly experienced here below; its perfection is
reserved for that day when from His great white throne, the King shall say “Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the
kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was an hungered, and thirsty, and a stranger, and
naked, and sick, and in prison and you ministered to Me.”
        6 - Pure in heart - The difference between outward and inward purity, and the acceptableness of the latter only in
the sight of God are everywhere taught.  True Christianity lies in the heart, in the purity of the heart; the washing of that
from wickedness.  Begins in a “heart sprinkled from an evil conscience” or a “conscience purged from dead works”.
The conscience thus purged - the heart thus sprinkled - there is light within wherewith to see God.  The inward vision
thus clarified, and the whole inner man in sympathy with God, each looks upon the other with complacency and joy,
and we are “changed into the same image from glory to glory”.  But the full and beatific vision of God is reserved for
that time to which the Psalmist stretches his views “As for me, I shall behold Thy face in righteousness:  I shall be
satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness”.  Psalm 17:15
        7 - Peacemakers - of all these beatitudes this is the only one which could hardly be expected to find its definite
ground in the Old Testament; for that most glorious character of God, the likeness of which appears in the peacemakers,
had yet to be revealed.  When this reconciliation actually takes place, and one has “peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ” -- even “the peace of God which passes all understanding” - the peace-receivers become transformed into
peace-diffusers.  God is thus seen reflected in them; and by the family likeness these peacemakers are recognized as
the children of God
        Results of having these seven characteristics
        Blessed are those who, in spite of the world’s disdain, dare to be righteous
        Persecution is certain
        In the cause of righteousness; for the sake of goodness; for their uprightness; for being and doing right; for the
sake of justice; for being and doing right
        Reproach you; taunt you; denounce you; abuse you; give you a bad name; be cruel to you
        Revile - abuse you to your face (in opposition to backbiting)
        All outward acts of violence -- all that the hand can do and all that the tongue can effect
        They persecuted the prophets before your time in exactly the same way
        You do but serve yourselves heirs to their character and sufferings, and the reward will be common
        He does not end His discourse without intimating that such characters were in existence, and that already they
were before Him.
        The rewards are found in each case to grow out of the characters to which they are attached, and in their
completed form are but the appropriate coronation of them
        The fulfillment of these promises has both a present and a future state, an initial and a consummate stage.

BINDING – This mode of expression (whatsoever you bind…) was frequent among the Jews; they considered that everything
that was done upon earth, according to the order of God, was at the same time done in heaven.  Hence they were
accustomed to say that when the priest, on the Day of Atonement, offered the two goats upon earth, the same were
offered in heaven.  As one goat, therefore, is permitted to escape on earth, one is permitted to escape in heaven; and
when the priests cast the lots on earth, the priest also casts the lots in heaven.  Matthew 16:19 AC
•        Binding and loosing were terms in frequent use among the Jews, and they meant bidding and forbidding, granting
and refusing, declaring lawful or unlawful

      2.  Spiritually
--1 Corinthians 12:18  But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He                         pleased
Two births; two families; two settings.  A city is a collection of families;  Church = city.  Until see what God is building,
you don’t value it.

BITTERNESS - caused when we have righteous indignation and try to bring revenge on someone and we are not
righteous and pure enough to do it
      Bitterness = unfulfilled revenge
--retain in your heart/spirit the debt the offender owes you (FF)
--like drinking poison with the hope that someone else will die
      --almost always rooted in unforgiveness
•        Bitterness cannot be hidden.  A bitter soul is not seeking oneness, but justice.  It is driven by the unresolved theft
of its peace, personhood, or possessions.  Bitterness is not just a wound seeking healing it is a prosecuting attorney
building a case against the guilty.  Because a bitter soul is conjoined to the injustice committed against it, it perpetually
is listening to the voice of its heartache and, thus, perpetually wounded by the unforgiven offence.  Christ is fully capable
of transforming what was meant to destroy us while using it as a means to perfect us.  We must believe that God is fully
able to redeem all we go through.  If we harbor unbelief about either the Father’s goodness of His abilities, our difficulties
will reduce us to bitter, angry people.  Consider also, if the devil is set on destroying us, it must be because God has
something powerful waiting for us in the future.  The devil does not waste his time attacking insignificant people; he
attacks those he fears will be used by God to liberate others.  How is it that bitterness can exist in us?  Bitterness is a
demonic manipulation of a wound or injustice we suffer in our soul.  Jesus, however, said that the only way to save our
souls is to lose them to Him.  To pass through some of the most difficult battles, you must carry the cross.  Our steps are
ordered of God.  Therefore, if I have faced an injustice, He must have either allowed it or ordered it.  In His great
omniscience, He knew I would need more love or faith or dependency upon Him, so He arranged my steps so He could
work in me His overcoming nature.  My battles are not about me and someone else, or even me coming against the devil;
ultimately, in every conflict, God is seeking to create Christlikeness in me.  As the character, authority, and love of Christ
become functional in my life, my enemies are subdued and Christ is triumphant through me.  We must, therefore, get over
the idea that there is a painless place of existence on earth, and we must learn how to carry the cross of Christ.  The
cross puts to death our unbelieving, fearful, selfish nature, and allows the character of Christ to emerge in our spirits.
The cross is the cost we pay so that redemption prevails.  FF
•        The difference between bitterness and joy is our capacity to forgive (LB)

the brook is to be altogether full of trouble, to be vexed and tormented and utterly to be overwhelmed with a strong
stream of troubles (TOD)

BURDEN IS LIGHT - If we always let Him be our Instructor in service, and left the responsibility with Him, our strength
would not be exhausted with worry and anxiety, but all would be at His disposal and would accomplish his ends. (HT)

BURDEN OF THE CROSS – when is the cross the heaviest?  On the way of bearing it.  When is it no longer heavy?
When you are hung on it.  When the cross itself bears you, you will not feel heaviness anymore, for you have died, so
you feel no pain.  If you have truly died to self you will feel no yoke at all.  This yokeless yoke is easy.  This burdenless
burden is light.  (Nee)  Matthew 11:30

BURN OUT - Embracing responsibilities out of God’s grace is the place of burn out.  Burn out doesn’t come from hard
work as much as from a religious yoke.  A religious yoke consists of caring for vineyards (responsibilities) that carnal men
give us that are out of the will of God.  A believer newly awakened to fervency is susceptible to false yokes.

BURNED UP - burned up – a person’s work can be burned up – it means their life lacked maturity and obedience.  (MB)

BURNING - Burning of love. The fire and wound of this forceful love.  Love’s urgent longings.  Purged and cleansed in
loving; spiritual fire.  Cleanness of heart (Psalm 51:12).  Fire of loving wisdom.  “He sent fire into my bones and instructed
me”  (Lamentations 1:13).  God’s wisdom is silver tried in the fire (Psalm 12:6)  Purgative fire of love.  Purges of
ignorance.  “My heart grew hot within me and a certain fire was enkindled while I was knowing” (Psalm 39:3  Burn
interiorly and gently with love.  Burns by soliciting the heart for the Beloved.  “My heart was enflamed and my reins have
been changed, and I was brought to nothing, and I knew not”  Psalm 73:21-11.  So intense is the burning that the soul is
seemingly consumed in that flame, and the fire makes it go out of itself, wholly renews it, and changes its manner of
being.  The fire of love bears this property:  the breeze by which it is cooled and refreshed makes it increase, for in the
lover, love is a flame that burns with a desire to burn more, like the flame of natural fire.  The flame of love is the Spirit of
its bridegroom, who is the Holy Spirit.  Our God is a consuming fire (Deuteronomy 4:24).
